A comparison of hematology, plasma chemistry, and injuries in Hickory shad (Alosa mediocris) captured by electrofishing or angling during a spawning run
ConclusionsElectrofishing for Hickory shad using a constant DC voltage resulted in numerous hematologic and biochemical changes, with no additional injuries or deaths compared to angling. Capture method must be considered when evaluating fish condition, and blood variables should be partitioned by sex during spawning season. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Effect of time and temperature on anticoagulant ‐dependent pseudothrombocytopenia in Göttingen minipigs
ConclusionsStudy results provide evidence for an anticoagulant‐dependent pseudothrombocytopenia in minipigs progressing over time and depending on the storage temperature of the blood sample. It is therefore recommended to perform thrombocyte counts as soon as possible after blood collection, and in case of low counts, investigate for the presence of artifactual platelet clumping. A metastatic secretory gastric plasmacytoma with aberrant CD3 expression in a dog
Abstract A 10‐year‐old crossbred dog was presented with a 6‐week history of hematemesis, melena, anorexia, and lethargy. Clinical evaluation revealed a gastric mass with a regional lymphadenomegaly as well as a monoclonal gammopathy manifesting as hyperglobulinemia. Cytologic and histopathologic analyses were consistent with a round cell neoplasm; neoplastic cells showed nuclear immunoreactivity for MUM1 and diffuse cytoplasmic reactivity for CD3. Polymerase chain reactions performed on fixed and fresh tissue identified a clonal rearrangement with an IgH primer set. An extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) was confirmed ...

Macrocytosis secondary to hydroxyurea therapy
This report shows that hydroxyurea treatment is a differential diagnosis for prominent macrocytosis in dogs in the absence of other signs of erythrocyte regeneration. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Nonregenerative immune ‐mediated anemia associated with a diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma in a captive jaguar (Panthera onca)
Abstract An 18‐year‐old male castrated jaguar (Panthera onca) was presented with anorexia and continuous bleeding from the oral cavity after a history of fighting with the partner animal. Clinical evaluation revealed ulcerating lesions on the gingiva and hard palate and a hematoma on the tongue. Computed tomography of the head and endoscopic examination of the esophagus and stomach were unremarkable. Hematology and clinical chemistry revealed severe nonregenerative anemia, mild thrombocytopenia, and moderate azotemia. Several PCRs for feline hemotropic mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma haemofelis, M heamominutium, M turicensi...

Parasitemia due to Sarcocystis neurona ‐like infection in a clinically ill domestic cat
Abstract An 8‐year‐old, 6‐kg, male neutered Domestic Shorthair cat was presented to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center (OSU‐VMC) for difficulty breathing. Physical examination and thoracic radiographs indicated pneumonia, a soft‐tissue mass in the left caudal lung lobe, and diffuse pleural effusion. The effusion was classified as modified transudate. Rare extracellular elongated (~5–7 μm × 1–2 μm) zoites with a central round to oval‐shaped purple to deep purple vesicular nucleus with coarsely stippled chromatin and light blue cytoplasm were seen on a peripheral blood smear. Serum IgG...

Preanalytic processing of rat plasma influences thrombin generation and fibrinolysis assays

Infection with a novel derogenid trematode in a Flap ‐necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis)
Abstract A 2‐year‐old female Flap‐necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis) was presented with a history of anorexia. On physical examination, three 11×4×2 mm, light tan‐pink, raised, gelatinous, freely movable, poorly demarcated, raised nodules were identified within the oral cavity. An impression smear contained multiple, light blue to green structures exhibiting an 18×35 μm, elliptical‐shaped anterior portion and a single 1×150 μm filament with a tapered end. Initial differential etiologies included trematode ova, flagellate protozoa, fungal sporangia, plant material, and sperm. Fungal culture yielded no g...

Cutaneous iridophoroma in a Green iguana ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬(Iguana iguana)‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Abstract An 11‐year‐old intact male Green iguana (Iguana iguana) was referred for treatment of a probable iridophoroma based on previous cytopathology. A periocular mass was present near the right medial canthus. Computed tomography did not show any sign of metastasis. Clinicopathologic abnormalities included lymphopenia and hyperproteinemia. Cytologic and histologic evaluations of the mass were consistent with iridophoroma. Complete surgical excision of the mass was not possible without removal of the orbit due to local tissue involvement. Recovery and suture removal were unremarkable. Adjunctive radiation therapy was...
