Genomics of liver transplant injury and regeneration
While improved surgical techniques, post-operative care, and immunosuppression regimens have reduced morbidity and mortality associated with orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), further improvement of outcomes requires personalized treatment and a better understanding of genomic mechanisms involved. Gene expression profiles of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, regeneration, and rejection, may suggest mechanisms for development of better predictive tools and treatments. The liver is unique in its regenerative potential, recovering lost mass and function after injury from ischemia, resection, and rejection. (Source: Transplantation Reviews)

Bloodstream infections among solid organ transplant recipients: Epidemiology, microbiology, associated risk factors for morbility and mortality
Bloodstream infections (BSIs) remain important causes of morbidity and mortality among solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients and still threaten the success of SOT. In general, among SOT recipients, risk factors for BSIs are associated with prior ICU admission, catheterization, older recipient or donor age…etc. Pulmonary focus, nosocomial source of BSIs, lack of appropriate antibiotic therapy and other variables have significant impacts on BSIs-related mortality in SOT. Most of BSIs in SOT are caused by gram-negative bacteria. (Source: Transplantation Reviews)

Portal vein thrombosis and liver transplantation: Implications for waiting list period, surgical approach, early and late follow-up
Abstract: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a well-known and relatively common complication of liver cirrhosis. In the past, PVT was considered as a contraindication for liver transplantation (LT). To characterize prevalence, risk factors, perioperative management and outcome of PVT in the setting of LT, the English literature published between 1991 and 2011 was reviewed.Of 6807 articles, 280 were selected, and 39 experiences were analyzed in detail (methodology, type and duration of treatments, peri-operative management, strategy to avoid recurrence, strengths and weaknesses, Oxford evidence level, citations). 3/39 studies ...
