Blood conservation in cardiac surgery
This article aims at reviewing the currently available evidence about blood conservation strategies in cardiac surgery. Pre‐operative anaemia and perioperative allogeneic blood transfusions are associated with worse outcomes after surgery. In addition, transfusions are a scarce and costly resource. As cardiac surgery accounts for a significant proportion of all blood products transfused, efforts should be made to decrease the risk of perioperative transfusion. Pre‐operative strategies focus on the detection and treatment of anaemia. The management of haematological abnormalities, most frequently functional iron deficie...

Multiplate and TEG platelet mapping in a population of severely injured trauma patients
ConclusionsIntra‐device variability was low for TEG PM and MP, but the two point‐of‐care devices measuring platelet function correlate poorly with each other in injured trauma patients. Each device also had different clinical associations. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Provision of cellular blood components to CMV ‐seronegative patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation in the UK: survey of UK transplant centres
ConclusionsThe survey demonstrated a surprisingly high rate (22.7%) of centres continuing to provide blood components from CMV‐seronegative donors despite SaBTO guidance. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

HLA polymorphisms and risk of red blood cell alloimmunisation in polytransfused patients with sickle cell anaemia
ConclusionThis study suggests that polytransfused patients with SCA possessing the HLA‐DQB1*03 and HLA‐C*06 allele variants are more susceptible to alloimmunisation. In addition, HLA‐DRB1*04 and HLA‐DRB1*11 alleles were seen to be associated with the production of anti‐Fya and anti‐K antibodies, respectively. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Use of granulocyte transfusions among haematology units in England and North Wales
ConclusionThere remains a lack of consistency about use of granulocytes, which is unsurprising given the lack of clinical data to support their efficacy. We did, however, demonstrate a willingness to participate in further research. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)
