Lack of evidence for the transmission of hepatitis E virus by coagulation factor concentrates based on seroprevalence data
ConclusionHEV seroprevalence was significantly higher in the blood donors than in the patients with a history of coagulation factor concentrate administration. In one of two patients with detectable anti‐HEV IgG antibodies, the coagulation factor concentrate was not the probable source of infection. Our data suggest that HEV is efficiently inactivated during the manufacturing process of coagulation factor concentrates. Thus, testing for the presence of HEV RNA in plasma donated for the preparation of coagulation factor concentrates may not be necessary. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

The use of next ‐generation sequencing for the determination of rare blood group genotypes
ConclusionsThe NGS assay enables a comprehensive genotype analysis of many blood group systems and is capable of detecting common and rare alleles, including alleles not currently detected by commercial assays. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Effects of a targeted blood management programme on allogeneic blood transfusion in abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery
ConclusionsSuch low levels of allogeneic transfusion have not been reported previously. We hypothesise that this is due to the additional blood management contributions of the specialised cell salvage practitioners and collaboration with the rest of the vascular surgical team. These results support the development of pre‐operative anaemia clinics. Overall the service runs at a profit to the trust. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

A survey of the blood supply in China during 2012 –2014
ConclusionsThe blood product supply in China is steadily increasing. Blood centres in China continue to face challenges regarding their ability to provide a sufficient blood supply in the future. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Vasovagal reactions in blood donors: risks, prevention and management
SUMMARY This narrative review examines current research on risk factors, prevention methods and management strategies for vasovagal reactions (VVRs) that occur during or as a result of blood donation. VVRs are important to blood collection agencies (BCAs) as they negatively impact the number of completed collections, perceptions of the safety of blood donation and rates of donor return. There has been significant progress in understanding and preventing VVRs in blood donation in recent years, with a multitude of risk factors identified. This has resulted in many BCAs implementing evidence‐based strategies, such as donor ...
