Pathogen reduction of whole blood: utility and feasibility
ConclusionsEven if not 100% effective against agents that are present in high pathogen load titres, WB PRT could massively impact blood safety in LMIC by providing safer products at an affordable cost. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Interpretation of low reactivity in the Abbott Architect rHTLV I/II assay
ConclusionsSamples with an S/CO ratio of <4·0 on the Abbott Architect rHTLV I/II platform represent a low risk of HTLV infection in the UK, and organs from such donors might reasonably be considered for transplantation, within the context of appropriate risk–benefit assessment. The practice of diagnosing and reporting transfusion ‐associated circulatory overload: a national survey among physicians and haemovigilance officers
ConclusionWhen diagnosing and reporting TACO, physicians and haemovigilance officers do consider known risk factors for TACO. Reporting could be improved by increasing the awareness of haemodynamic variables in future education programmes. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

The healthy donor effect impacts self ‐reported physical and mental health – results from the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS)
ConclusionsTwo selection patterns were revealed. Among young individuals, better self‐perceived mental health was associated with a blood donor. With the increase in age, better self‐perceived physical health was associated with blood donation. (Source: Transfusion Medicine)

Iron deficiency among blood donors: experience from the Danish Blood Donor Study and from the Copenhagen ferritin monitoring scheme
Summary Blood components collected from blood donors are an invaluable part of modern‐day medicine. A healthy blood donor population is therefore of paramount importance. The results from the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS) indicate that gender, number of previous donations, time since last donation and menopausal status are the strongest predictors of iron deficiency. Only little information on the health effects of iron deficiency in blood donors exits. Possibly, after a standard full blood donation, a temporarily reduced physical performance for women is observed. However, iron deficiency among blood donors is not ref...

Blood service in the Tibetan regions of Garz ê and Aba, China: a longitudinal survey
ConclusionsA relatively safe and complete blood service system has been developed in this region. However, there is still an urgent need for comprehensive and effective support from the government in terms of policies and finance. As an epidemic area of hydatid disease and sexually transmitted disease, this region needs to emphasise public health measures, such as blood safety and inappropriate usage of blood products. Cornerstones of patient blood management in surgery
This article reviews the current evidence and ongoing research in the field of PBM in surgery. Strategies to implement PBM have shown significant benefits in appropriate transfusion practice, reduced costs and improved length of hospital stay. Recently published national quality standards have recognised the features of the PBM blueprint such as the consideration of alternatives to red blood cell transfusion, the active measures to reduce perioperative blood loss and the appropriate management of post‐operative anaemia. Adopting PBM in surgical patients should be paramount to reduce the risks posed by perioperative anaem...
