FoxP in bees: A comparative study on the developmental and adult expression pattern in three bee species considering isoforms and circuitry
This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. We describe 11 neuron populations expressing the transcription factor FoxP in the developing and adult honeybee brain. Some of them show differential isoform expression. Distinct neural projection patterns were revealed by anatomical tracing of the largest, bi‐partite cluster. Adult bumblebees and dwarf bees exhibited comparable expression patterns. The findings are discussed in the light of deep homology. (Source: The Journal of Comparative Neurology)

Organization of afferents to the orbitofrontal cortex in the rat
This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. We assessed the organization of afferents to the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), focusing on projections from the thalamus, amygdala, and the midbrain dopamine neurons. Although specific inputs to certain architectonically‐defined OFC areas were identified, a simplified organization was evident: medial OFC areas receive mediodorsal thalamic inputs, lateral areas of the OFC are the target of basolateral amygdala projections, and a central zone is innervated by caudal midbrain dopamine neurons. Morphology of the Utricular Otolith Organ in the Toadfish, Opsanus tau
This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Utricular otolith of inner ear is a weight‐lending structure that serves to enable transduction of inertial acceleration of self‐motion and head orientation with respect to gravity to control balance and equilibrium. Microscopy techniques were applied to visualize the sensory epithelium, its neural innervation and its synaptic organization in toadfish. (Source: The Journal of Comparative Neurology)

Corticofugal Circuits: Communication Lines from the Cortex to the Rest of the Brain
This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Pyramidal cells in cortical layers 5 and 6 are the only cells in the cerebral cortex with axons that leave the cortex to influence the thalamus. Layer 6 cells provide modulatory feedback input to all thalamic nuclei, whereas layer 5 cells provide driving input to higher order thalamic nuclei. Here, we review current understanding of the corticofugal pathways and speculate on their functional contributions to neural processing and behavior. (Source: The Journal of Comparative Neurology)

Regional chemoarchitecture of the brain of lungfishes based on calbindin D ‐28K and calretinin immunohistochemistry
This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. The distribution patterns of cells and fiber tracts immunoreactive for calbindin and calretinin in the brain of lungfishes highlights major chemoarchitectural features and brain regionalization that are shared with sarcopterygians, particularly with amphibians, supporting the idea that living lungfishes are close relatives to tetrapods.
