The Impact of Hispanic Ethnicity on Knowledge and Behavior Among Patients With Diabetes
Conclusions Hispanic patients with diabetes exhibit less knowledge about CVD risk/protective factors due to lower education and English literacy. Educational interventions should be tailored to those with less education/limited English proficiency. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

Patient Perception of Midlevel Providers in Pediatric Diabetes Care
Conclusions The survey population reported a high understanding of dietitian roles. However, the roles of other midlevel providers were not as well understood by youth with type 1 diabetes and their parents, which could represent a missed opportunity for care. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

The Prevalence and Correlates of Mental and Emotional Health Among American Indian Adults With Type 2 Diabetes
Conclusions This study addresses a gap in the literature by demonstrating the associations between various mental/emotional health factors and diabetes-related health problems for Indigenous Americans. Findings underscore the importance of holistic, integrated primary care models for more effective diabetes care. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

Perception and Sense of Control Over Eating Behaviors Among a Diverse Sample of Adults at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes
Conclusions Study findings demonstrate that eating healthy requires a complex interaction between individual perceptions of food and sense of control over eating patterns and sociopolitical and economic structural factors that restrict healthy eating options while promoting unhealthy ones. Programs for long-term eating behavioral change necessary to reduce type 2 diabetes and obesity need to incorporate strategies that address individual-level factors of perception of food and sense of control over eating patterns, as well as structural level factors such as poverty and food insecurity. Adapting the Group Lifestyle Balance™ Program for Weight Management Within a Large Health Care System Diabetes Education Program
Conclusions The adapted GLB intervention for weight management implemented through an existing diabetes education program in a large health care system was feasible and effective in the population, regardless of participants’ diabetes status. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

Hypoglycemia in Insulin-Treated Adults on Established Nasogastric Feeding in the General Ward: A Systematic Review
Conclusions Hypoglycemia is not uncommon in this population, but further research is needed for quantification. Standardized documentation and reporting methods incorporating sample size and study duration, such as hypoglycemic events per patient-days, would facilitate interstudy comparisons, as would documentation of hypoglycemia at the 2 most commonly defined levels: < 63 mg/dL (3.5 mmol/L) and < 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L). Improving Foot Examinations in Patients With Diabetes: A Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI-CME) Project
Conclusions The PI-CME approach can be successfully used both with faculty staff physicians (who receive CME credits) and residents (who do not receive credits) to improve performance on diabetes quality measures. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

The Impact of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia on Clinical and Cost-Related Issues in Patients With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Conclusions Poor diabetes self-management leads to an increased risk for hypoglycemia and the development of long-term complications associated with poor glycemic control. Hypoglycemia is also associated with increased health care costs and resources required to treat hypoglycemic events, as well as personal financial costs and loss of productivity at school or work. In addition, fear, anxiety, and worry about hypoglycemic episodes are shown to interfere with patients’ quality of life. Nocturnal hypoglycemia can cause a number of immediate clinical consequences, including convulsions, coma, and even death. Repeated l...

Complementary Approaches to Improving Glucose Control--Insulin and Incretins: Patient Case Studies in Action
Conclusion Insulin remains the most potent glucose-lowering agent available for the treatment of type 2 diabetes but has limitations, primarily of hypoglycemia and secondarily of weight gain. The addition of incretin-based therapies complements the glucose-lowering potential of basal insulin, without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia, potentially allowing for lower doses of insulin and without increasing weight gain (DPP-4 inhibitors) or possibly with weight loss (GLP-1 receptor agonists). Incretin-based therapies offer advantages over prandial insulin to address postprandial hyperglycemia. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)

Health Literacy Among Insulin-Taking African Americans: A Need for Tailored Intervention in Clinical Practice
Conclusions Insulin-taking African Americans with a high likelihood of limited FHL are approximately 6 times more likely to have an A1C ≥ 8% compared to patients with a possibility of limited FHL, or adequate FHL, demonstrating the need for focused interventions tailored to FHL needs. Enhancing Diabetes Self-care Among Rural African Americans With Diabetes: Results of a Two-year Culturally Tailored Intervention
Conclusions A community-based group DSME program using storytelling is feasible. This research will help to inform clinicians and health policymakers as to the types of interventions that are feasible in a larger rural population. If such a program is carried out, we can improve knowledge, reduce complications, and improve quality of life among rural African Americans. (Source: The Diabetes Educator)
