Epidemiology of pathogens causing urinary tract infections in an urban community in southern Brazil
Publication date: Available online 5 December 2018Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Carlos E. Reu, Waldemar Volanski, Karoline C. Prediger, Geraldo Picheth, Cyntia M.T. Fadel-PichethAbstractThe frequency of urinary tract infection (UTI) and uropathogens in the community was determined by assessing urine culture results of outpatients at a Brazilian public laboratory in a year period. Patients were classified according to sex and age; women were additionally classified considering pregnancy or diabetes. Cultures were considered positive when growing pure cultures with colony counts>104 CFU/...

HTLV-1 infection among men who have sex with men in Central Brazil
Publication date: Available online 6 December 2018Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Lisie Souza Castro, Grazielli Rocha de Rezende, Fernanda Rodas Pires Fernandes, Larissa Melo Bandeira, Marco Antonio Moreira Puga, Tayana Serpa Ortiz Tanaka, Sabrina Moreira dos Santos Weis, Ana Carolina Paulo Vicente, Koko Otsuki, Ana Rita Coimbra Motta-CastroAbstractHuman T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first retrovirus discovered in humans and is endemic in several parts of the world. Because of risk behaviors, mainly sexual, men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of acquiring HTLV...

Molecular types of Cryptococcus species isolated from patients with cryptococcal meningitis in a Brazilian tertiary care hospital
Publication date: Available online 30 November 2018Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Fernanda Wirth, Maria Isabel Azevedo, Luciano Z. GoldaniAbstractThere are limited data on the molecular epidemiology of cryptococcosis in Brazil. Here, we report on the identification of the molecular pattern of the Cryptococcus species that caused meningitis in patients admitted in a Brazilian reference tertiary care hospital, and review the published studies addressing the molecular epidemiology of Cryptococcus in Brazil. Our study has shown the predominance of molecular type VNII in predominantly HIV-infecte...

Assessment of conventional PCR and real-time PCR compared to the gold standard method for screening Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women
In this study, we aimed to compare the performance of conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (qPCR) assays as screening methods for GBS in pregnant women against the microbiological culture method considered as the gold-standard. A total of 130 samples from pregnant women were analyzed for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software, version 20.0. The verified colonization rate was 3.8% with the gold-standard, 17.7% with conventional PCR assay, and 29.2% with the qPCR test. The trials with conventional...

Monetary costs and hospital burden associated with the management of invasive fungal infections in Mexico: a multicenter study
ConclusionsIFIs are as frequent as HIV asymptomatic infection and tuberculosis. Costs estimations allow to assess cost-avoidance strategies to increase targeted driven therapy and decrease adverse events and their costs. (Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases)

The influenza season 2016/17 in Bucharest, Romania – surveillance data and clinical characteristics of patients with influenza-like illness admitted to a tertiary infectious diseases hospital
ConclusionsDistinctive co-circulation of A/H3 and B/Victoria in Bucharest, Romania in the 2016/17 influenza season was found. While the A/H3 subtype was predominant throughout Europe that season, B/Victoria appears to have circulated specifically in Romania and the Eastern European region, predominantly affecting preschoolers and school children. A 19-year old man with IgA vasculitis after vaccination
Publication date: Available online 30 October 2018Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Alexandre Malek, Sara Isabel Gomez-Villegas, Alejandro de la Hoz, Cima Nowbakht, Cesar A. AriasAbstractA 19-year-old patient who mistakenly received two doses of influenza vaccine 10 days before presentation, was admitted with malaise, weakness, and a purpuric non-blanching rash most prominent on the ankles followed by abdominal pain and hematochezia 72 h later. The diagnosis of influenza vaccine-related Henoch–Schonlein vasculitis was made. This complication, although rare, is the most common vasculitis ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteremia among HIV and non-HIV patients in a Mexican tertiary care center
ConclusionsFew studies have reported on the characteristics associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteremia, especially among HIV-negative patients. Out of 145 TB-infected patients with blood culture results available, 21 turned out positive. Anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and a BMI < 18 kg/m2 were associated with mycobacteremia. Antiretroviral therapy immunologic non-response in a Brazilian population: association study using pharmaco- and immunogenetic markers
ConclusionSome significant univariate associations remained independently associated at multivariate survival analysis modeling, such as pre-treatment CD4+ T cells counts, IL2 and ABCB1 genotypes, and use of protease inhibitors, yielding a predictive model for the probability for immune response. More studies are needed to unravel the genetic basis of ART immunological non-response. (Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases)
