Herbal molecules in eye diseases
Publication date: September 2014 Source:Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology, Volume 4, Issue 3 Author(s): Kai-On Chu , Chi-Pui Pang The eyes are exposed to oxidative stress due to light absorption and the high metabolism rate of their tissue cells. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many major eye diseases, including ocular inflammation, neovascularization, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Herbal molecules, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, and vitamin E, have been tried as ocular aliments. Although there are many positive outcomes for preve...

Outcome of a 10-year follow-up of laser in situ laser keratomileusis for myopia and myopic astigmatism
Conclusion We analyzed 6.3% of patients who regularly returned for postoperative examinations. Despite the relatively low 10-year-visit rate and the inclusion of single- and multiple-treatment cases, our results may represent the real-world picture of LASIK; furthermore, our study shows that LASIK is an effective and safe procedure. Retinal detachment with a break at pars plicata associated with congenital malformation of the lens–zonule–ciliary body complex
Publication date: Available online 18 September 2014 Source:Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology Author(s): Fang-Yi Tsai , Ling-Ing Lau , Shih-Jen Chen , Fenq-Lih Lee Retinal detachment with a break at the pars plicata associated with congenital malformation of lens–zonule–ciliary body complex is rare; most reports are of young Japanese male patients with atopic dermatitis. The present case report is the first to describe the condition in a Chinese patient with no atopic dermatitis or trauma history. A 22-year-old male presented with blurred vision in the left eye for 4 months. Fundus examination revealed shallow l...

Negative Mantoux test in a patient with definite pulmonary and ocular tuberculosis
Publication date: Available online 20 September 2014 Source:Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology Author(s): Chen-Cheng Chao , Chun-Ju Lin , Huan-Sheng Chen , Tsung-Lin Lee The case is reported of a patient with pulmonary and ocular tuberculosis presenting with blurred vision in both eyes. A 27-year-old well-nourished male nursing-home resident with a previous history of traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage was brought to the ophthalmological clinic due to progressively blurred vision. Central corneal thickness measurement by Fourier domain optical coherence tomography, ocular response analyzer and ultrasound pachymetry
Conclusion FD-OCT, ORA, and USP demonstrated good inter-observer reproducibility and intra-observer repeatability. The three measurements were highly correlated; however, systematic differences between the three tested devices did exist. FD-OCT was a reliable and examiner-independent method in CCT measurement. Bilateral uveitis associated with concurrent administration of rifabutin and nelfinavir
Publication date: Available online 7 October 2014 Source:Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology Author(s): Wen-Hsin Cheng , Cheng-Hsien Chang , Po-Liang Lu , Hsien-Chung Lin Rifabutin-associated uveitis has been recognized as a dosage-dependent side effect. Previous studies have reported that clarithromycin or fluconazole may elevate concentrations of rifabutin through inhibition of metabolism through the cytochrome P-450 pathway. Nelfinavir is a protease inhibitor widely used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The interactions between protease inhibitors and rifabutin have not been reported...
