Strategies and dental care in the treatment of patients with myelomeningocele
ABSTRACT Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a congenital malformation that occurs in the embryonic period, characterized by failure in closure of the caudal portion of the neural tube during central nervous system formation. Alterations and complications can be associated with this condition, such as hydrocephalus, neurogenic bladder, orthopedic problems, and motor and cognitive impairment. This patients with MMC also have predisposition to develop latex allergy and high caries risk and activity due to deficient oral hygiene, fermentable carbon hydrate‐rich diet and prolonged use of sugar‐containing oral medications. This paper...

Oral myiasis in older adult with severe Alzheimer ’s disease
ConclusionsOral and maxillofacial myiasis in older adults showed low incidence and good prognosis of cure, when there were no systemic complications. Weakness, frailty, dementia, oral lesions, labial incompetence, poor oral hygiene, and bad breath were associated with this disease in reported cases. Preferential therapy choices were debridement alone or combined with Ivermectin. In this case report, debridement and Ivermectin prescription was an effective therapy for an older adult with severe Alzheimer’s disease. (Source: Special Care in Dentistry)

Multidisciplinary approach in a case of Hand –Schüller–Christian disease with maxillary involvement
We report a case of Hand–Schüller–Christian disease with diabetes insipidus, skull and maxillary involvement in a 16‐year‐old boy referred to our observation for gradual increase in mobility of the teeth and subsequent gradual loss of the second premolars and the first molars of the upper jaw. Due to the extension of the lesion and the age of the patient, surgery, and chemotherapy was chosen as the more fit treatment according to the current protocol. The clinical and radiological evaluation at the end of the therapy and after 5 years showed complete remission. The absence of relapse has allowed to initiate a fixe...

Levels of serum sclerostin, metabolic parameters, and periodontitis in postmenopausal women with diabetes
ABSTRACTDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease defined by hyperglycemia, which is associated with periodontal disease and exerts an effect on bone metabolism. The aim of this study was to determine serum levels of sclerostin in postmenopausal women with diabetes and determine a possible association with periodontal disease. Sixty‐one postmenopausal women (32 with diabetes and 29 without diabetes) were evaluated. Blood was collected for biochemical analysis and the determination of serum sclerostin. The participants were also submitted to a clinical examination for the evaluation of periodontal status. A total of 7...

Skeletal open ‐bite treatment with zygomatic anchorage for a child with mental retardation: A new modality
ABSTRACTAnterior open bite (AOB) is one of the most difficult malocclusions to treat and maintain in orthodontics. Malocclusion occurs more frequently in children with disabilities than in healthy children. Surgical correction of severe AOB often requires maxillary impaction to reduce the anterior facial height. The zygomatic buttress area could be a valuable anchorage site to achieve intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth. A 16‐year‐old boy with mental retardation showing signs of persistence of infantile behavior, decreased cognitive functioning, and psychomotor skill deficits (no identified syndrome) with an AOB was...

Leukocyte adhesion defect ‐I: rare primary immune deficiency
ABSTRACT Leukocyte adhesion defect I is a rare disorder (1:1,000,000) caused by diminished expression of CD‐18 β2 integrins on leukocytes leading to abnormal adhesion, migration, and chemotaxis. Clinical manifestations include delayed separation of umbilical cord, omphalitis, recurrent severe infections, impaired wound healing, persistent oral ulcers, and severe periodontitis in primary and permanent dentition. A 5‐year‐old girl, second‐born child to parents with consanguinity, presented with pain and mobility of lower teeth. There was history of recurrent infections and multiple hospital admissions with CD18 leve...

Clonidine as a preoperative sedative
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the use of oral clonidine as a preoperative sedative prior to parenteral moderate sedation. Initially, four patients were given 0.2 mg oral clonidine but reduced to 0.1 mg clonidine due to significant drops in blood pressure. Oral clonidine doses of 0.1 mg were then given to 19 patients preoperatively. In all these patients, blood pressure measurements decreased, but there were no significant differences in amounts of sedative agents needed in the clonidine group and the control group (N = 80). The conclusions reached suggest that clonidine has an advantage over other p...
