Molar incisor hypomineralization in HIV ‐infected children and adolescents
The objective was to determine the prevalence of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) among individuals between 7 and 15 years old infected or noninfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The study was conducted with 33 HIV‐infected individuals (study group; SG) and 66 non‐HIV‐infected schoolchildren (control group; CG), paired by gender and age. Data collection was based on medical records (SG), a questionnaire for caregivers and oral examination for diagnosis of MIH (European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry criteria) and caries (DMFT index and ICDAS). Data were analyzed with Mann‐Whitney, chi‐square, a...

A pharmacotherapy review of the novel, oral antithrombotics
ABSTRACT Coagulation disorders account for a high incidence of death in the U.S. due to stroke, myocardial infarction, and venous thromboembolism. In the past few years, numerous agents have been brought to market for the treatment of thromboembolism or prevention of thromboembolism. Similar to warfarin, these agents can cause bleeding disorders, which may exacerbate dental care treatment plans. This literature review examines the newer agents for the treatment of thromboembolism disorders, common side effects and drug interactions, the specific medical conditions each agent treats, and the dental perspective on how to med...

Risks, consequences, and prevention of falls of older people in oral healthcare centers
ABSTRACT One‐third of community‐dwelling people older than 65 years of age fall each year, and half of them fall at least twice a year. Older care home residents are approximately three times more likely to fall when compared to community‐dwelling older people. Risk indicators for falls are related to the older people's body, environment, behavior, and activities. An important health risk indicator is (orthostatic or postprandial) hypotension, which may induce cerebral hypoperfusion. Although the majority of falls remain without major consequences, 10% to 25% of falls in care homes result in bodily trauma. Prevalent ...

Efficacy of imidazolquinoline on treatment of condyloma acuminatum of the buccal mucosa
ABSTRACT The condylomata acuminata is a benign epithelial neoplasm induced by papillomavirus, and it is characterized by the proliferation of stratified squamous epithelial tissue that affects the anogenital and oral mucosa. It is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease and has a higher prevalence in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Various therapies have been used for the removal of lesions, such as cryotherapy, surgical laser and surgical excision, which are painful and scarring. These techniques, however, do not eliminate the virus and relapses are common shortly after treatment. The use o...

Dental treatment of a patient with Opitz G/BBB syndrome
This study reports the clinical features of Optiz syndrome and its importance in the knowledge of patients who are developmentally challenged as a whole, in order to establish adequate dental treatment for a certain clinical case. A 19‐year‐old patient visited the Paulista University for a dental treatment. The extraoral examination revealed ocular hypertelorism (wide‐spaced eyes), oblique eyelids, epicanthus, low‐set cart, and intellectual disability. During the intraoral examination, large caries lesions were observed surrounding the braces of the fixed orthodontic appliance and poor oral hygiene. Preventive and ...

Oral healthcare management in Bardet Biedl syndrome
ABSTRACT Bardet Biedl syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with variable clinical presentation and challenging diagnosis. Recognition of orofacial features might help in the diagnosis. Kostmann syndrome: oral aspects and 10 ‐year follow‐up case report
This report describes the case of a 5‐year‐old female KS patient treated with regular infusions of granulocyte stimulating factor (granulokine), with primary complaint of gingival bleeding and tooth mobility, and followed up for 10 years. Conventional periodontal treatment and some extractions were performed, after neutrophil function tests using flow cytometry. The invasive procedures were carried out at an outpatient clinic under antibiotic prophylaxis due to a low neutrophil count and an impaired neutrophil function presented. During the 10‐year follow‐up period, despite episodes of recurrent gingivitis and peri...

Dental utilization for Medicaid ‐enrolled children with cystic fibrosis
