Oral health needs in individuals with trisomy 18 and trisomy 13: Implications for dental professionals
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine oral health needs and dental care in individuals with trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 (full, mosaic, partial and other, mixed types). Primary feeding method was also examined. Data was collected from a parent‐completed, mixed method survey (TRIS Survey). Mean age in months was 120.2 (range 38 to 394 months) and 133 (range 36 to 405 months), respectively, for trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 individuals. Results indicated the majority of individuals received routine dental care from their family dentist. Approximately 80% in both groups needed some form of specialized dental care. Clos...

Development of an intraoral device for social inclusion of a physically disabled patient
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to describe the use of an intraoral assistive technology for a patient with idiopathic generalized muscular dystonia, presenting temporomandibular disorder and severe anterior tooth mobility and diastema. A multidisciplinary team developed an intraoral device to provide typing and painting functions, and promote relaxation of masticatory muscles without compromising the teeth and supporting tissue structures. The occlusal splint associated with the device promoted muscle relaxation and relief of the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction, in this case with generalized muscle d...

Periodontal treatment in a patient with generalized idiopathic dystonia
ABSTRACT Dystonia is a neurological disorder that can cause constant muscle contractions and motor limitations. This work reports a clinical case of periodontal treatment in a patient with generalized idiopathic dystonia. The intraoral clinical examination was focused on the presence of caries and periodontal diseases. The plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were measured. Initially, oral hygiene instruction was provided using a soft conventional toothbrush and dental floss, but the clinical results achieved using these methods were inadequate. Alternative methods of plaque removal were off...

Emergency route diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma initially diagnosed as a temporomandibular disorder
ABSTRACT Salivary gland malignancy (SGM) can affect both major and minor glands and manifests clinically with various presentations. The most common type of SGM is mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), which has been previously reported to be associated with symptomatology associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This case report describes a patient with an aggressive form of MEC of the parotid gland that was initially diagnosed as TMD. In addition, the patient's MEC was diagnosed emergently based on development of acute clinical symptomatology. To the best of our knowledge, emergency route diagnosis of MEC affecting t...

Childhood bruxism: Related factors and impact on oral health‐related quality of life
This study aimed to assess childhood bruxism relating associated factors and the bruxism's impact on oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). A case‐control study was performed with 3‐ to 6‐year‐old children obtained from public preschools in Brazil. The case and control groups had 21 and 40 children, respectively. Associations between bruxism and respiratory problems (p = 0.04, OR: 0.33, CI: 0.09 to 1.14), dental wear (p < 0.01, OR: 0.01, CI: 0.00 to 0.05), malocclusion (p < 0.01, OR: 0.06, CI: 0.01 to 0.35), and dental caries (p = 0.02, OR: 0.22, CI: 0.04 to 1.04) were observed. The OHRQoL overall me...

Health trends in a geriatric and special needs clinic patient population
ConclusionsWithin cohorts, patients seen in the GSND clinic tended to have more medical problems than patients attending the FAMD clinic, particularly mental health conditions; and medication use was more common in the recent cohort in both GSND and FAMD clinics. (Source: Special Care in Dentistry)

Antibiotic‐associated diarrhea and the older dental patient: How do dentists respond?
ConclusionsMost dentists respond appropriately to antibiotic‐associated diarrhea in advising to stop the antibiotic, and seeking physician involvement if no improvement, but there are still many who make recommendations that could delay appropriate care. Dentists may wish to learn more about benefits of probiotics. (Source: Special Care in Dentistry)
