The Inpatient Assessment and Management of Motor Functional Neurological Disorders: An Interdisciplinary Perspective
Motor functional neurologic disorders (FND) — previously termed ‘hysteria′ and later ‘conversion disorder′ — are exceedingly common and frequently encountered in the acute hospital setting. Despite their high prevalence, patients with motor FND can be challenging to accurately diagnose and effectively manage. To date, there is lim ited guidance on the inpatient approach to the neuropsychiatric evaluation of patients with functional (psychogenic) neurologic symptoms. (Source: Psychosomatics)

Surrogate Alcohol or Nonbeverage Alcohol Consumption: The Surrogate Alcohol Questionnaire (SAQ)
Diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorders and their sequelae are common clinical questions for the consultation-liaison psychiatrist. At an urban, academic medical center, the authors consulted on several patients whose consumption of alcohol included nonbeverage forms of alcohol, (described in the literature as surrogate alcohols, nonbeverage alcohols, e.g., mouthwash). Surrogate Alcohol or Non-Beverage Alcohol Consumption: The Surrogate Alcohol Questionnaire (SAQ)
Diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorders and their sequelae are common clinical questions for the consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatrist. At an urban, academic medical center, the authors consulted on several patients whose consumption of alcohol included non-beverage forms of alcohol, described in the literature as surrogate alcohols, non-beverage alcohols, etc. (e.g., mouthwash). The authors describe here a case series of four patients who presented with surrogate alcohol consumption. The authors review the clinical issues and literature related to surrogate alcohol use. Primary Psychiatric Manifestations of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis: A Case Report and Literature Review
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a primary progressive chronic demyelinating neurological disease, occurring with an incidence of 1 per million in the West, whereas in developing countries, such as India, it has an incidence of 21 per million population despite the availability of widespread vaccination against measles.1,2 Measles is mainly a childhood infection, mostly occurring in children 1-2 years old; whereas SSPE is a long-term complication of primary measles infection among a certain group of children, occurring approximately 6 –8 years after the primary infection. An Update on Telepsychiatry and How It Can Leverage Collaborative, Stepped, and Integrated Services to Primary Care
In this era of patient-centered care, telepsychiatry (TP; video or synchronous) provides quality care with outcomes as good as in-person care, facilitates access to care, and leverages a wide range of treatments at a distance. (Source: Psychosomatics)

Primary Psychiatric Manifestations of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis: A Case Report and the Literature Review
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative condition, occurs with an incidence of 1 per million population in developed countries. However, it is occurring with an incidence of 21 cases per million in developing countries such as India. Though it can present with various non-specific behavioral problems along with a range of neurological manifestations at its onset, syndromal psychiatric diagnoses as sole manifestations rarely been reported. Hence here we are presenting a review of the literature on various primary psychiatric presentations of SSPE along with their management and a c...

In this era of patient-centered care, telepsychiatry (TP; video or synchronous) provides quality care with outcomes as good as in-person care, facilitates access to care, and leverages a wide range of treatments at a distance. Method. This conceptual review paper explores TP as applied to newer models of care (e.g., collaborative, stepped and integrated care). Results. The field of psychosomatic medicine (PSM) has developed clinical care models, educates interdisciplinary team members and provides leadership to clinical teams. (Source: Psychosomatics)

A Case of Delirium and Rhabdomyolysis in Severe Iatrogenic Opioid Withdrawal
Opioid withdrawal is often thought of as psychologically and physiologically distressing, but ultimately not life-threatening; however, it can result in severe medical complications. Our case describes an elderly gentleman on methadone maintenance therapy who experienced delirium and rhabdomyolysis associated with severe iatrogenic opioid withdrawal following initiation of naltrexone for management of an alcohol use disorder. This case and ensuing discussion illustrates the importance of pharmacovigilance and of medically managing opioid withdrawal; we also review some of the more serious complications associated with acut...

Prevalence and Predictors of Depression Among Patients With Epilepsy, Stroke, and Multiple Sclerosis Using the Cleveland Clinic Knowledge Program Within the Neurological Institute
Neurological conditions carry a high risk of depression. Given this risk, the Neurological Institute (NI) at Cleveland Clinic has initiated systematic screening for depression using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) embedded within its electronic medical record and its data capture system, the Knowledge Program (KP)1.
