Neural correlates of apathy in late ‐life depression: a pilot [18F]FDDNP positron emission tomography study
ConclusionThis pilot study suggests that increased apathy in subjects with LLD may be associated with greater amyloid and/or tau burden in certain brain regions. Future studies in larger samples would elucidate the generalizability of these results, which eventually could lead to improved diagnostic and treatment methods in LLD. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Do spouse caregivers of young and older persons with dementia have different needs? A comparative study
ConclusionTo improve spouse caregivers' well‐being and sense of efficiency, it would be interesting to develop a support programme with a common framework and specific modules depending on the PWD's age at disease onset. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Analysis of inedible substance ingestion at a Japanese psychiatric hospital
ConclusionsDementia patients were overrepresented in the inedible substance ingestion incidents. Items they wore or applied to their bodies were often subject to ingestion, and such behaviours mostly occurred around meal time. Therefore, the nursing staff were able to discover them quickly and treat most of the cases free of serious consequences. In contrast, schizophrenic patients were underrepresented in the incidents, and most cases involved ingestion of detergent powder or cigarettes, resulting in more serious consequences and requiring treatment. Caregiver burden in older adults with bipolar disorder: relationship to functionality and neuropsychiatric symptoms
ConclusionsIn this group of elderly BD patients, caregiver burden was more associated with symptoms frequently seen in others diseases as in dementia than with depressive, manic, or anxiety symptoms, which are often used as treatment outcomes measures goals in BD. Potential treatable and modifiable factors associated with caregiver burden could be caregivers' depression, anxiety, and medical comorbidities, as well as support for caregivers in terms of services and social relationships. Feelings of uselessness and 3 ‐year mortality in an Italian community older people: the role of the functional status
ConclusionsPeople who reported disability problems and a feeling of uselessness may be vulnerable to an increased risk for poor health outcomes in later life. This study outlined the importance of enquiring about feelings of uselessness, which is a relational variable that is linked to both psychological and physical health status, especially in older people who need help in daily activities. Falls, risk factors and fear of falling among persons older than 65 years of age
ConclusionThe frequency of falls among older people was similar to those in other populations. These results could be used to help select older persons who should be enrolled in fall prevention programmes. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Bright light therapy for sleep disturbance in dementia is most effective for mild to moderate Alzheimer's type dementia: a case series
Conclusion BLT could be an effective strategy for treating dementia patients, depending on their type and grade of their dementia. To confirm this hypothesis, it would be necessary to study a larger number of cases. Non‐pharmacological therapies for sleep disorders should be emphasized as a safe form of treatment for patients with dementia. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Cognitive decline and slower reaction time in elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment
ConclusionAltered performance in a speed task was observed in patients with MCI. The FRT task should further be explored for its role as a marker for cognitive decline in elderly individuals, particularly in those with MCI. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Admission of people with dementia to psychiatric hospitals in Japan: factors that can shorten their hospitalizations
ConclusionIn Japan, dementia patients account for over 25% of new admissions to psychiatric hospitals with dementia wards. The average length of stay in a psychiatric hospital dementia ward is more than 1 year. A discharge after fewer than 2 months is exceedingly rare for those in a dementia ward compared with dementia patients in other wards. If institutions focus on rehabilitation, it may be possible to shorten the stay of dementia patients in psychiatric hospitals. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Speaking one more language in early life has only minor effects on cognition in Taiwanese with low education level: the Taishan Project
ConclusionsDementia prevalence did not significantly differ between the multilingual (T, J, C) and bilingual (T, C) groups. However, given that the average age of the multilingual group was approximately 2 years older than that of the bilingual group, there may have been minor effects in the multilingual group.
