Cardiac function and cognition in older community ‐dwelling cardiac patients
ConclusionsNone of the echocardiographic measures as representative of cardiac function was correlated with memory or executive function in this group of community‐dwelling older cardiac patients. These findings contrast with those of previous studies. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Why do people with dementia pretend to know the correct answer? A qualitative study on the behaviour of toritsukuroi to keep up appearances
ConclusionsAll the responses that we defined as being toritsukuroi reflect a denial of acquired cognitive impairment. Further study is needed to clarify the association between toritsukuroi and either cognitive function or disease specificity. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Earlier and greater hand pre ‐shaping in the elderly: a study based on kinematic analysis of reaching movements to grasp objects
ConclusionsTo perform accurate prehension, elderly people have an earlier peak tangential velocity point than young adults. This allows for a longer adjustment time for reaching and grasping movements and for reducing errors in object prehension by opening the hand and fingers wider. Elderly individuals gradually modify their strategy based on previous successes and failures during daily living to compensate for their decline in dexterity and operational capabilities. Frontal lobe function in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease and caregiver burden
ConclusionOur findings indicate that to ameliorate the disabilities of patients and reduce caregiver burden, there is a need for interventions that focus on psychosocial burdens, as shown in previous studies, as well as on excessive dependency due to frontal lobe dysfunction. Possible effectiveness of low ‐dose pregabalin in a patient suffering from Lewy body disease and chronic pruritus
In this report, the case of an LBD patient who experienced severe itching that persisted for over 6 months, which was treated successfully with low‐dose pregabalin therapy, is described. This is the first study to report the effects of low‐dose pregabalin, which has been used to treat LBD‐related pain, to treat itching in a patient with LBD. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Serum tumour necrosis factor ‐α and interleukin‐6 levels in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment
ConclusionsThe present study suggests that serum IL‐6 levels of patients with AD might be higher than those of subjects with MCI and healthy controls. Serum TNF‐α and IL‐6 levels might be negatively correlated with cognitive function, and we suspect that serum IL‐6 levels could be biomarkers for AD. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

The role of social relationships among elderly community ‐dwelling and nursing‐home residents: findings from a quality of life study
ConclusionDepressive symptoms correlated with low scores in all WHOQOL‐BREF domains. The variables that correlated with living conditions in a nursing home were older age, male gender, lower physical domain scores, and higher social relationship scores. Opportunities for socialization in nursing homes may thus improve perception of quality of life in this domain. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)

Evaluation of changes in oxyhemoglobin during Shiritori task in elderly subjects including those with Alzheimer ‧s disease
ConclusionThese findings suggest that analysis of changes in oxyhemoglobin during Shiritori tasks may be a useful neuropsychological index for the early diagnosis of AD. Detailed studies will be conducted in LSMG to facilitate the early introduction of NIRS as a screening tool for cognitive impairment. (Source: Psychogeriatrics)
