Retrospective Review of Management and Outcomes of Pediatric Descending Mediastinitis
Conclusion This review represents the largest reported series of pediatric patients with descending mediastinitis. With 100% survival, our results suggest that pediatric descending mediastinitis can be safely managed by prompt surgical drainage. Broad-spectrum antibiotics covering MRSA and a low threshold for repeat surgical intervention have been an important part of our successful approach and may decrease length of stay. Effects of Memantine on Aminoglycoside-Induced Apoptosis of Spiral Ganglion Cells in Guinea Pigs
Conclusion Memantine attenuated the gentamicin-induced apoptosis of SGCs in guinea pigs. Moreover, memantine may affect Fas-FasL signaling in the receptor-mediated apoptotic pathway and caspase activation involved in the receptor-mediated and mitochondrial apoptotic pathways. Outcomes following Pediatric Auditory Brainstem Implant Surgery: Early Experiences in a North American Center
There are no approved Food and Drug Administration indications for pediatric auditory brainstem implant (ABI) surgery in the United States. Our prospective case series aims to determine the safety and feasibility of ABI surgery in pediatric patients <5 years old with congenital deafness at a tertiary North American center. The inclusion criterion was pre- or postlinguistic deafness in children not eligible for cochlear implantation. Seventeen candidates were evaluated (mean ± SD: age, 2.52 ± 0.39 years). Four patients underwent ABI surgery (age, 19.2 ± 3.43 months), including 4 primary procedures an...

Ciprofloxacin Decreases Collagen in Mouse Tympanic Membrane Fibroblasts
Conclusions Treatment of tympanic membrane fibroblasts with 0.3% ciprofloxacin, as found in eardrops, reduces fibroblast viability and collagen and α-tubulin protein levels. These findings could explain tympanic membrane healing problems associated with quinolone eardrops. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Vocal Fold Paralysis after Esophagectomy for Carcinoma
Conclusions Cervical approaches are associated with increased VFP in patients undergoing esophagectomy for malignancy. When cervical approaches and mobilization are required, the inclusion of an experienced cervical surgeon to identify the RLN may improve the rate of postoperative VFP. Patients with VFP after esophagectomy experience significantly more morbidity. Due to the potential delay in diagnosis and treatment of postoperative VFP, routine assessment of inpatient vocal fold function may be beneficial. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Impact of Nodal Level Distribution on Survival in Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Population-Based Study
Conclusion Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma most commonly involves nodal levels I, II, and III. Involvement of nodal level IV or V portends a worse prognosis than patients with only level I to III disease, and multimodality therapy should be considered for these patients. Pediatric Oral Electrical Burns: Incidence of Emergency Department Visits in the United States, 1997-2012
Conclusion Earlier incidence estimates of pediatric oral electrical burns varied substantially within the literature and varied from small case reports to single-year studies. Our multiyear data analysis provides evidence of decreasing annual incidence when compared with historical estimates for a common but potentially morbid injury among the pediatric population. Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Counseling in Pediatric Training: Are We Discussing Otolaryngology-Related Manifestations?
Conclusions Increased education about HPV and its otolaryngology-related manifestations should be undertaken to increase provider, patient, and parent awareness of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We propose that discussing the risks of otolaryngology-related disease be routinely included in HPV vaccination counseling. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Effects of a Fibrin Sealant on Skin Graft Tissue Adhesion in a Rodent Model
Conclusion There is a significant difference in the adhesion strength of skin grafts to the wound bed in the early postoperative period of the 2 groups. In areas of high mobility, using the fibrin sealant can keep the graft immobile during the critical phases of early healing. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Associations of Volume and Thyroidectomy Outcomes: A Nationwide Study with Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions This meta-analysis showed that patients who received thyroidectomies performed by high-volume hospitals and surgeons had shorter LOS and lower costs compared with those treated by low-volume hospitals and surgeons. In addition, in-hospital survival rates were better in patients treated by high-volume surgeons. Further research is needed to define the learning curve for thyroidectomy and to clarify how hospital volume and surgeon volume affect its success rate.
