Spatial Mapping in the Rat Olfactory Bulb by Odor and Direct Electrical Stimulation
Conclusion These data suggest that by programming an array of stimulating electrodes, it should be possible to selectively activate different regions of the olfactory bulb, generating unique patterns of neural activity as seen in normal smell. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Impact of Middle versus Inferior Total Turbinectomy on Nasal Aerodynamics
Conclusion TIT yields greater increases in nasal airflow but also impairs the nasal air-conditioning capacity to a greater extent than TMT. Radical resection of the turbinates may decrease the surface area stimulated by mucosal cooling. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

ss-Tricalcium Phosphate Implants in the Surgical Treatment of Empty Nose Syndrome
The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and morbidity of a β-tricalcium phosphate implant in the treatment of empty nose syndrome after turbinectomy. Only patients with a history of inferior turbinectomy and a complaint of permanent paradoxical nasal obstruction were included. β-Tricalcium phosphate ceramic implants were implanted under the mucoperiosteal plane of the lateral nasal wall to replace the head of the inferior turbinate. Symptoms and quality of life were assessed by 2 questionnaires: the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation and Rhinosinusitis Quality of Life. Fourteen patients were incl...

The Use of Ibuprofen in Posttonsillectomy Analgesia and Its Effect on Posttonsillectomy Hemorrhage Rate
Conclusion Age is an independent risk factor for posttonsillectomy bleeding. When age is controlled, there is no statistically significant increase in the incidence of posttonsillectomy bleeding events among patients treated with ibuprofen when compared to patients treated with codeine. Predictors of Foreign Body Aspiration in Children
Conclusions Patients with airway foreign bodies have varied presentations. The presence of any radiologic finding suggests that endoscopy should be performed, as a foreign body is probable. The absence of any history or physical examination finding was associated with a low likelihood of a foreign body. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Pathologic Changes of the Peripheral Vestibular System Secondary to Chronic Otitis Media
Conclusion The findings of our study suggest that the decrease in the number of vestibular sensory cells and dark cells could be the cause of the clinical symptoms of imbalance of some patients with chronic otitis media. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

The Role of Electrode Placement in Bilateral Simultaneously Cochlear-Implanted Adult Patients
Conclusion In adult patients who were simultaneously and bilaterally implanted, the use of a long straight array, the full electrode array insertion, and the proximity to the modiolus might be determining factors to obtain the best speech performance at 1 year, without influence on the speech perception scores after long-term use. Racial Differences of Pigmentation in the Human Vestibular Organs
Conclusions There is greater melanin pigmentation within the vestibular system of African Americans than in Caucasians, similar to what has been described in the cochlea. Racial differences in vestibular physiologic function have been observed in the literature and may be explained by differences in melanin pigmentation. Tablet Audiometry in Canadas North: A Portable and Efficient Method for Hearing Screening
Conclusions Of the study population, 14.8% tested positive for hearing loss based on our interactive tablet audiometer. In this setting, the tablet audiometer was both time efficient and largely language independent. This type of testing is valuable for providing much-needed hearing health care for high-risk populations in rural and remote areas where audiology services are often unavailable. Hemodynamic Parameters during Laryngoscopic Procedures in the Office and in the Operating Room
Conclusion Severe hemodynamic events are more likely to occur in the OR than in the office during laryngologic procedures. While larger studies will be required to establish rates of dangerous cardiovascular events in laryngoscopic procedures, hemodynamic parameters indicate that office-based procedures have a safety benefit for procedures that can be conducted in either setting. Videofluoroscopic Swallow Examination Does Not Accurately Detect Cricopharyngeal Radiation Strictures
Videofluoroscopy is the standard technique to evaluate dysphagia following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC). The accuracy of radiography in detecting strictures at the pharyngoesophageal junction is unknown. Our aim was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of videofluoroscopy in detecting strictures at the pharyngoesophageal junction prior to endoscopic dilatation in a consecutive series of HNC survivors with dysphagia. Presence of a stricture on videofluoroscopy was determined by 3 experienced blinded investigators and compared against a gold standard, defined as presence of a mucosal tear during endoscopic dil...

Botulinum Toxin in Secondarily Nonresponsive Patients with Spasmodic Dysphonia
Chemodenervation with botulinum toxin (BoNT) has been effective and well tolerated for all types of dystonia for >30 years. We reviewed outcomes of our patients treated with BoNT serotype A (BoNT-A) for spasmodic dysphonia (SD) who became secondarily nonresponsive. We found that 8 of 1400 patients became nonresponsive to BoNT-A (0.57%), which is lower than the secondary nonresponse rate in other dystonias. After a cessation period, 4 of our patients resumed BoNT-A injections, and recurrence of immunoresistance was not seen in any of them. When compared with patients with other dystonias, patients with SD receive extreme...
