Comprehensive mapping of national school food policies across the European Union plus Norway and Switzerland
Abstract Childhood obesity is a major public health challenge in Europe. Schools are seen as an important setting to promote healthy diet and lifestyle in a protected environment and school food‐related practices are essential in this regard. To understand what policy frameworks European countries have created to govern these practices, a systematic assessment of national school food policies across the European Union plus Norway and Switzerland (n = 30 countries) was carried out. The survey revealed that all 30 countries currently have a school food policy in place; a total of 34 relevant policies were identified, 1...

US evidence‐based dietary guidelines: The history and the process
Abstract Since 1980, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture have published the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) for the purpose of promoting the health of the American public. Based on the scientific findings from a select group of scientists known as the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), as well as public input, the DGA are the cornerstone of federal food and nutrition policy and education in the United States. The DGAC is formed and their work is governed by a transparent, consistent, systematic process. Topic formation influences expertise solicited for the DGA...

Infant nutrition – diet between 6 and 24 months, implications for paediatric growth, overweight and obesity
Abstract Infants are growing rapidly from 6–24 months and have high nutrient needs in proportion to their body size. This sub‐group of the population are prone to dietary imbalances and inadequacies. It is of vital importance to get nutrition right during this time period to support appropriate growth and development. Overweight and obesity rates are increasing in pre‐school children, and maternal nutritional status and early life feeding have been identified as ‘critical windows’ for obesity risk. After the recommended period of exclusive breastfeeding, an increasingly diversified selection of foods are offered ...

Nutrition and epigenetics: An emerging field
Abstract Epigenetics refers to heritable changes to gene expression encoded not by differences in the genetic sequence but by other chemical modifications to chromatin, such as methylation of the DNA backbone, or acetylation and methylation of the histone core. The total set of such epigenetic marks can be referred to as the epigenome, but unlike the genome, epigenetic marks differ between tissues and are modified by metabolic conditions and environmental exposures throughout life. In humans and animal models, key metabolic pathways, such as those of energy metabolism and obesity, are believed to be partly regulated by epi...

Vitamin D: An overview of vitamin D status and intake in Europe
Abstract In recent years, there have been reports suggesting a high prevalence of low vitamin D intakes and vitamin D deficiency or inadequate vitamin D status in Europe. Coupled with growing concern about the health risks associated with low vitamin D status, this has resulted in increased interest in the topic of vitamin D from healthcare professionals, the media and the public. Adequate vitamin D status has a key role in skeletal health. Prevention of the well‐described vitamin D deficiency disorders of rickets and osteomalacia are clearly important, but there may also be an implication of low vitamin D status in bone...
