Sugars – part of a bigger picture?
Abstract If levels of health in the worst performing regions in England matched the best performing ones, England would have one of the lowest burdens of disease of any developed country. So what can be done from a diet and nutrition perspective to support this shift, and what role does the current preoccupation with intakes of free sugars have to play? Public Health England has recently furnished the Department of Health with an evidence package, detailing eight levers that could be used in a sugar reduction package. Evidently, the current levels of free sugars consumption are considerably in excess of the latest recommen...

Introducing solid foods using baby‐led weaning vs. spoon‐feeding: A focus on oral development, nutrient intake and quality of research to bring balance to the debate
Abstract The World Health Organization recommends that infants be introduced to first solid foods from 6 months of age to complement milk feeds. The introduction of complementary foods is required to help infants meet their changing nutritional requirements. In recent years, baby‐led weaning and spoon‐feeding have been discussed as mutually exclusive approaches to introducing first solids. Baby‐led weaning advocates that babies direct and control the process of weaning, deciding what they will eat, how much and how quickly. There is an emphasis on parents providing chunks of soft food that babies can pick up and che...

Parents, portions and potential distortions: Unpicking children's meal size
Abstract Parents and caregivers play a powerful role in shaping the food environment in which their children learn about appropriate portion sizes. Parents often report just ‘knowing’ the amount of food to serve to their children, but evidence indicates that these decisions are driven by the portions parents pick for themselves. This is potentially problematic because, like adults, young children are susceptible to overeating when served large portions, which raises questions about how and when children develop their own portion knowledge. Understanding the social, emotional and cultural factors that shape children's l...

Development and evaluation of food and nutrition teaching kits for teachers of primary schoolchildren
Abstract Food and nutrition education is a compulsory part of the primary school curriculum across the UK, but primary school teachers report the need for further support to deliver food and nutrition lessons. Although the British Nutrition Foundation's education website, Food – a fact of life (FFL), contains a vast selection of resources for primary teachers, it was hypothesised that a prescribed ‘off the shelf’ package of resources may be more desirable for teachers and better support their requirements. This led to the creation of the FFL teaching kits. The Foundation developed two versions of the FFL teaching kit...

Do we need to worry about eating wheat?
Abstract Wheat is a staple food throughout the temperate world and an important source of nutrients for many millions of people. However, the last few years have seen increasing concerns about adverse effects of wheat on health, particularly in North America and Europe, with the increasing adoption of wheat‐free or gluten‐free diets. This relates to two concerns: that wheat products are disproportionally responsible for increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes and that wheat gluten proteins cause a range of adverse reactions, including allergies, coeliac disease and ‘non‐coeliac gluten sensitivity’. The first con...

Micronutrient status and intake in the UK – where might we be in 10 years' time?
Abstract Poor dietary choices not only manifest in obesity, which is currently the main public health focus in the UK, but can also lead to inadequate micronutrient intakes, with implications for health. Recent dietary survey data and measurements of status biomarkers have highlighted folate, vitamin D, calcium, iron and iodine to be amongst the micronutrients of most concern for particular subgroups of the UK population. Those most vulnerable to inadequate intakes of these micronutrients include adolescents, ethnic minorities and lower socio‐economic groups. Teenage girls and women of childbearing age are of particular ...
