Diagnostic Delay in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Qualitative Study of Symptom Interpretation Before the First Visit to the Doctor
ConclusionsThe nature and severity of symptoms are the deciding factors in their interpretation, by both the GP and the patient. Both the patient's disease recognition and his/her subsequent interaction with the doctor is influenced by the patient's body awareness and general attitude towards going to the doctor. The results showed that the greater the patient's body awareness, the better the disease recognition, the fewer barriers to contacting the GP and the shorter the delay in doing so. Pathways Through Care for Long‐Term Pain After Knee Replacement: A Qualitative Study With Healthcare Professionals
ConclusionThe present study illustrated potential obstacles to ‘best practice’ in the management of chronic pain after total knee replacement, identified through research with healthcare professionals. There is a need to improve access to services and develop well‐defined and flexible care pathways that can accommodate complexities inherent to chronic pain, such as an unpredictable course. Pain Management Programmes for Non‐English‐Speaking Black and Minority Ethnic Groups With Long‐Term or Chronic Pain
Abstract Increasing ethnic diversity in the UK means that there is a growing need for National Health Service care to be delivered to non‐English‐speaking patients. The aims of the present systematic review were to: (1) better understand the outcomes of chronic pain management programmes (PMPs) for ethnic minority and non‐English‐speaking patients and (2) explore the perspectives on and experiences of chronic pain for these groups. A systematic review identified 26 papers meeting the inclusion criteria; no papers reported on the outcomes of PMPs delivered in the UK. Of the papers obtained, four reported on PMPs con...

The Clinical Effectiveness of the Extended‐Scope Physiotherapist Role in Musculoskeletal Triage: A Systematic Review
ConclusionThe evidence suggests that ESPs are clinically effective. However, there were methodological shortcomings in the reviewed studies, and further research, using larger sample sizes, multiple locations and comparisons of the same patient cohorts, would strengthen the evidence available to influence future commissioning of these services. ‘I've Been Walking on Eggshells All My Life’: Fibromyalgia Patients' Narratives About Experienced Violence and Abuse
In conclusion, the narrated life stories indicated that violence is still hidden behind a wall of silence and non‐interference in our society. The devastating mental and physical consequences of violence in different forms may be carried by the individual for years, even decades. Understanding any exposure to violence that a patient has endured may help healthcare professionals to understand the individual's health behaviour and any possible reluctance to undergo treatment and rehabilitation. Aquatic Exercises were Associated with an Acceptable State of Symptoms in Patients with Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases: Results from a Study with Interrupted Time‐Series Design
ConclusionsLiving with an inflammatory rheumatic disease is a lifelong challenge. Pain and fatigue are considered major obstacles for daily functioning and adequate self‐management strategies are requested. Based on the high proportion of patients reporting to be in an acceptable state of both pain and fatigue during periods with aquatic exercises, the intervention should be regarded as an important self‐management tool rather than a treatment option assuming long‐lasting effects. The Understanding of Pain by Older Adults Who Consider Themselves to Have Aged Successfully
ConclusionsThe findings of the present study suggest that predictable experiences of pain as one ages may contribute to an acceptance of pain as a biomedical certainty, a belief reinforced both by health professionals and society. However, one may have chronic pain and yet consider oneself to have aged successfully, and it should therefore be recognized that there is a distinction between having pain and having a problem with pain.
