Diagnosis and management of pyothorax in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
Abstract ObjectiveTo describe the diagnosis, management, and outcome of pyothorax in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo). Case SummaryA domestic ferret was evaluated for a history of lethargy, anorexia, and pyrexia. Pleural effusion was detected with radiography and ultrasonography, and a diagnosis of pyothorax was made following cytologic evaluation of pleural fluid. Bilateral thoracostomy tubes were placed for thoracic drainage and lavage, and the ferret was treated with intravenous crystalloid fluids, antimicrobials, and analgesics. Bacterial culture of the pleural fluid yielded Fusobacterium spp. and Actinomyces ...

A review of associated controversies surrounding glucocorticoid use in veterinary emergency and critical care
Abstract ObjectiveTo review the literature in human and veterinary medicine regarding the indications for, efficacy of, and controversies surrounding glucocorticoid (GC) administration in the emergency and critical care (ECC) setting, and to provide an overview of the most commonly used synthetic GC formulations. MedicationsSynthetic GCs vary in GC and mineralocorticoid potency, hypothalamic pituitary axis suppression, duration of action, route of administration, and clinical indication for use. Some of the GC compounds commonly used in human and veterinary ECC include hydrocortisone, prednisone, methylprednisolone, and de...

Status epilepticus in dogs and cats, part 2: treatment, monitoring, and prognosis
Abstract ObjectiveTo discuss current anticonvulsant drug options and advances in treatment of status epilepticus (SE) and to review the prognosis associated with SE. TreatmentWhen treating a patient with SE, the main goals are to halt seizure activity, prevent further seizures, identify the cause of the seizures, and manage any complications. The veterinary literature indicates that benzodiazepines are the most common class of drugs used for the initial treatment of SE. Although many anticonvulsant drugs are currently available for treatment of SE, there is a lack of evidence demonstrating clear benefit to the use of speci...

Acute encephalopathy in a 2 ‐year‐old pot‐bellied pig following accidental intoxication with clonazepam
Abstract ObjectiveTo describe a case of successful management of clonazepam toxicity causing encephalopathy in a pot‐bellied pig. Case SummaryA 2‐year‐old female pot‐bellied pig weighing 13.5 kg was presented for evaluation of clinical signs of acute encephalopathy. Based on the animal's history and clinical signs, a tentative diagnosis of benzodiazepine (BZP) intoxication was made. The results of a urinary drug screening test designed to detect illicit substances in human urine indicated benzodiazepine exposure. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis later confirmed clonazepam (urinary concentration 496...

Retrospective evaluation of coyote attacks in dogs: 154 cases (1997 –2012)
ConclusionsCoyote attacks on dogs are a problem in Southern California and are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, especially in dogs with wounds to the thorax. Aggressive management involving surgical wound repair was associated with survival to discharge. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Measurement of plasma cell ‐free DNA concentrations in dogs with sepsis, trauma, and neoplasia
ConclusionscfDNA can be readily identified in canine plasma using 2 fluorescence assays. DNA extraction offers no advantage over direct measurement. Compared to healthy controls, dogs with sepsis or moderate‐severe trauma have significantly increased plasma cfDNA concentrations. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Hemostatic abnormalities in dogs with naturally occurring heatstroke
ConclusionsHemostatic derangements are common in dogs with naturally occurring heatstroke. Alterations in PT, aPTT, tPCA, and fibrinogen concentrations appear to be associated with the outcome at 12–24 hours PP, exemplifying the need for serial measurement of multiple laboratory hemostatic tests during hospitalization, even when within reference interval on presentation. The development of DIC, as defined in this cohort, was not associated with mortality; however, nonsurvivors had significantly more coagulation abnormalities during the first 24 hours PP.
