Evaluation of gastric and bladder tonometry as indicators of tissue perfusion in induced hypotension in dogs
ConclusionsGastric and bladder tonometry can be used to detect hypoperfusion. Further studies are warranted to determine the potential use of gastric and bladder tonometry in assessing dogs in clinical situations. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Retrospective evaluation of cats with elapid snake envenomation associated neurotoxicity requiring mechanical ventilation: 12 cases (2005 –2014)
ConclusionsCats requiring MV for elapid snake envenomation have a favorable outcome and require a relatively short period of MV. Complications encountered are unlikely to influence outcome. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Comparison of time to obtain intraosseous versus jugular venous catheterization on canine cadavers
ConclusionIO catheterization using an automatic rotary insertion device was performed more rapidly and successfully than jugular venous catheterization using a cut‐down technique in canine cadaver. These findings suggest IO catheterization may be more efficient for gaining vascular access in the appropriate emergency clinical situations when preexisting IV access does not exist. Fecal markers of inflammation, protein loss, and microbial changes in dogs with the acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS)
Abstract BackgroundIdiopathic acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS) is characterized by acute onset of bloody diarrhea, severe dehydration, and increased vascular and intestinal mucosal permeability. Markers of gastrointestinal inflammation, protein loss, and changes in the intestinal microbiota have not been studied extensively in dogs with AHDS. Key FindingsFor 3 consecutive days, feces were collected from dogs with AHDS, and assayed for calprotectin and S100A12 (both markers of inflammation), α1‐proteinase inhibitor (a marker of gastrointestinal protein loss), and the presence of selected species of bacteria. Co...

Effects of parenteral fish oil on plasma nonesterified fatty acids and systemic inflammatory mediators in dogs following ovariohysterectomy
ConclusionsPostoperative administration of FO emulsion increases plasma omega‐3 NEFA concentrations promptly, but does not significantly attenuate CRP production or leukocyte cytokine production capacity. FO infusion at the dosage used in the present study can be safely used in dogs, but it was not clearly beneficial in decreasing post‐OVH indices of inflammation. Frequency and number of B ‐lines using a regionally based lung ultrasound examination in cats with radiographically normal lungs compared to cats with left‐sided congestive heart failure
ConclusionsThe lack of B‐lines in cats without respiratory disease (with radiographically normal lungs) and the predominance of B‐lines in cats with left‐sided CHF suggest that a regionally based LUS protocol may be clinically useful for the identification and evaluation of feline respiratory conditions. Successful use of digoxin ‐specific immune Fab in the treatment of severe Nerium oleander toxicosis in a dog
This report describes the successful use of digoxin‐specific immune Fab in the treatment of oleander toxicosis in a dog, which has not previously been published in veterinary literature. Oleander poisoning can be associated with permanent cardiac arrhythmias due to the ischemic damage. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Retrospective evaluation of and risk factor analysis for presumed fluid overload in cats with urethral obstruction: 11 cases (2002 –2012)
ConclusionsFO is a possible complication of the treatment of UO. The administration of a fluid bolus on presentation, and the development of a heart murmur or gallop sound during treatment were the most clinically useful risk factors identified. The development of FO is associated with significant increases in both the cost and length of hospitalization, but was not associated with increased mortality. The use of intravesicular alteplase for thrombolysis in a dog with urinary bladder thrombi
This report describes the use of alteplase in a dog for thrombolysis of intravesicular thrombi. In patients that develop intravesicular thrombi, intravesical instillation of alteplase can be considered as a method for dissolution of these thrombi. Acute respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock in a cat with disseminated toxoplasmosis
Abstract ObjectiveTo describe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and septic shock in a cat with disseminated toxoplasmosis. Case SummaryA 2‐year‐old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented for acute respiratory distress. At the time of presentation it had been receiving cyclosporine for treatment of eosinophilic dermatitis. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe mixed nodular interstitial and alveolar patterns. An endotracheal wash was performed, which confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary toxoplasmosis. Despite initial treatment with oxygen supplementation and intravenous clindamycin, the cat developed r...

Use of a vascular closure device during percutaneous arterial access in a dog with impaired hemostasis
This report describes use of a VCD for arterial closure following percutaneous access in a dog with impaired hemostasis; to the authors’ knowledge, this is the first clinical report of a VCD used in a veterinary species. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Escalator ‐related injuries in 30 dogs (2007–2014)
ConclusionsWhile uncommon, escalator accidents can result in significant injury to dogs. Measures can be taken to prevent these injuries from occurring, whether through client education, dog training, structural modifications in the escalators themselves, or avoidance of escalators. In the present study, the survival rate of dogs injured on escalators was 100%. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)

Retrospective evaluation of the impact of early enteral nutrition on clinical outcomes in dogs with pancreatitis: 34 cases (2010 –2013)
Conclusions and Clinical RelevanceResults of the study suggested that feeding within 48 hours of hospitalization for canine pancreatitis has a positive impact on return to voluntary intake and decreases the frequency of GI in these patients, independent of CSIS. The traditional protocol of withholding food during hospitalization may not be necessary nor yield the most benefit for patient recovery; subsequently early enteral refeeding should be considered.
