Stereotactic body radiation therapy for heart-base tumors in six dogs
ConclusionsThis SBRT protocol resulted in rapid tumor volume reduction, and jet ventilation effectively reduced treatment delivery times. However, cardiac arrhythmias (presumably tumor or treatment associated) and sudden death were common after SBRT. Therefore, SBRT is a potentially useful treatment but may not be appropriate for dogs with incidentally diagnosed, slowly growing tumors, which are not causing cardiovascular disturbances. Longer follow-up and larger case numbers are needed to more completely define safety and impact of treatment on long-term survivability. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Interbreed variation in serum serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) concentration in healthy dogs
ConclusionsInterbreed variation in serum 5-HT concentration was found in healthy dogs aged 1–7 years. These differences should be taken into account when designing clinical studies. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Electrocardiographic confirmation of a twin pregnancy in a mare at 8 months of gestation
Publication date: Available online 23 June 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary CardiologyAuthor(s): Lisse Vera, Annelies Decloedt, Glenn Van Steenkiste, Dominique De Clercq, Jan Govaere, Gunther van LoonAbstractA 15-year-old Warmblood mare, at 8 months of gestation, was presented to the Ghent University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for evaluation of suspected stage one labor. Transrectal ultrasonography revealed no clear signs of placentitis or stage one labor. The combined thickness of uterus and placenta was 11 mm and the cervix was closed. Twin pregnancy was suspected by transabdominal ultrasonography but could not be ...

Pericardial effusion associated with systemic inflammatory disease in seven dogs (January 2006 – January 2012)
We describe seven dogs with systemic inflammatory disease, PE without tamponade and increased cardiac troponin I concentrations. Echocardiographic findings and adjunctive testing did not identify other known causes of PE. Resolution of the PE was documented in five of seven dogs in which follow-up echocardiography was performed, often after anti-inflammatory therapy. Resolution of PE was associated with normalisation of cardiac troponin I levels. Clinical signs had not recurred in six dogs with follow-up for more than 12 months and up to 7 years. These findings suggest an association between systemic inflammation and PE i...

Left subclavian artery dissection associated with connective tissue abnormalities resembling Marfan-like syndrome in an English bulldog
Publication date: April 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, Volume 20, Issue 2Author(s): Ilaria Biasato, Renato Zanatta, Lorella Maniscalco, Rocchina Evangelista, Bryan Iotti, Selina IussichAbstractThe unexpected demise of a 12-year-old male neutered English bulldog solicited a gross examination, which revealed a blood-filled space occurring in the proximal left subclavian artery (LSA). It originated about 1 cm from the branching point of the vessel and progressively dilated for 3 cm distal to this origin. Histopathological investigation showed that the tunica media of the LSA was more than 50% split, with the ...

Extracardiac intrapericardial myxosarcoma causing right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in a dog
Publication date: April 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, Volume 20, Issue 2Author(s): E.T. Karlin, V.K. Yang, M. Prabhakar, S.L. Gregorich, S. Hahn, J.E. RushAbstractA 13-year-old male castrated pomeranian cross was referred for evaluation of episodes of collapse and a suspected cardiac mass. The presence of a mass at the base of the heart within the pericardial space was confirmed by echocardiography. Additional diagnostics included computed tomography, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate, and thoracic radiographs. The mass was surgically debulked and diagnosed as myxosarcoma via histopathology. This case ...

High-pressure balloon valvuloplasty for severe pulmonary valve stenosis: a prospective observational pilot study in 25 dogs
ConclusionsIn this cohort of 25 dogs with severe PS, HPBVP was safe and effective. The procedural success rate and high number of optimal results achieved with HPBVP suggest future randomized controlled trials comparing HPBVP to conventional valvuloplasty are warranted. Left atrial deformation and phasic function determined by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease
ConclusionDogs with MMVD in CHF appear to have lower LA longitudinal strain and strain rate variables compared with dogs with subclinical disease. Further studies are needed to establish if our initial findings can provide useful information for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of dogs with MMVD. Pharmacodynamic assessment of diuretic efficacy and braking in a furosemide continuous infusion model
ConclusionsThere was a strong relationship between urine volume and absolute urine electrolyte excretion. Urine volume was strongly correlated to uNa:uK, giving it potential as a spot indicator of urine production during diuresis. The decrease in uNa:uK over time during the infusion is consistent with mineralocorticoid modification of urinary electrolyte excretion, supporting renin–angiotensin–aldosterone activation as a cause of diuretic braking in this model. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion-to-aortic ratio provides a bodyweight-independent measure of right ventricular systolic function in dogs
ConclusionsThe ratios, TAPSE:Ao and TAPSE:Ao(adj), are a bodyweight-independent means of assessing right ventricular systolic function in dogs and for identifying severe PH in dogs with or without MMVD. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Polymerase chain reaction detection of Bartonella spp. in dogs from Spain with blood culture-negative infectious endocarditis
ConclusionsBartonella could be an important cause of blood culture-negative infectious endocarditis in dogs from Spain. The outcome for those dogs affected with Bartonella spp. was grave. Prompt empirical treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanate plus fluoroquinolones could be of value in cases of blood culture-negative endocarditis. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Diagnostic accuracy of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations in cats with and without cardiomyopathies
ConclusionsPlasma ANP concentrations were higher in cats with more advanced cardiomyopathy. Although assaying the ANP concentration alone may not help to diagnose cardiac disease, measuring provides additional information that is useful for assessing the severity of cardiomyopathies. Plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy horses and horses with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsThis assay allows precise measurement of [HCY]p in horses. Unlike in people, [HCY]p is not increased in horses with AF and cannot predict AF recurrence. This might be due to differences in the underlying pathological mechanisms of AF development in people and horses. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)
