Interreader agreement of radiographic left atrial enlargement in dogs and comparison to echocardiographic left atrial assessment
ConclusionsThe present study found that interreader agreement for radiographic classification of LAE was substantial among specialists and moderate for all readers. Subjective, global assessment of radiographic LAE is better than using any single Roentgen sign. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Echocardiographic assessment of right ventricular systolic function in Boxers with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
ConclusionsTricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and S' are reduced in Boxers with ARVC. In contrast to prior studies evaluating these parameters in dogs of different breeds and body types, no correlation was found between markers of RV function and body weight in this population of Boxer dogs. Radiofrequency catheter ablation of accessory pathways in the dog: the Italian experience (2008–2016)

Evaluation of the inhibitory effects of telmisartan on drug-induced renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation in normal dogs
ConclusionsTelmisartan administration did not suppress RAAS activation. The appearance of aldosterone breakthrough supports the incomplete blockade of RAAS activation. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Echocardiographic indices of age- and gender-dependent cardiac remodeling over the adult lifespan in Irish Wolfhounds
Discussion and conclusionsOver the adult life course, echocardiography demonstrated increasing LV dimensions in male IWs only. In both genders, FS and EF decreased, and atrial diameters increased. Females showed an attenuated remodeling process. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Diagnostic and prognostic utility of surface electrocardiography in cats with left ventricular hypertrophy
ConclusionsArrhythmias as well as prolonged QT and QTc are useful ECG parameters in identifying LVH and predicting survival in affected cats. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

QT instability, an indicator of augmented arrhythmogenesis, increases with the progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs
ConclusionAnalyses of QT intervals demonstrated changes in STI, LTI, and TI. Increased QT prolongation and instability are significantly related to mortality and may be useful in determining prognosis of MMVD patients. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology)

Murmur grading in humans and animals: past and present
Publication date: Available online 12 July 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary CardiologyAuthor(s): M. RishniwAbstractCardiac murmurs were first described approximately 200 years ago. Subsequently, various clinicians, starting with Samuel Levine, have proposed grading schemes, depicting intensity, or other murmur characteristics, in an attempt to differentiate pathological and physiological murmurs or different degrees of pathology. In the 1960s, these schemes were adapted by veterinary cardiologists and have been used over the last 50 years. However, the clinical utility of these schemes has only recently been examined in...

Pericardial effusion associated with systemic inflammatory disease in seven dogs (January 2006 – January 2012)
We describe seven dogs with systemic inflammatory disease, PE without tamponade and increased cardiac troponin I concentrations. Echocardiographic findings and adjunctive testing did not identify other known causes of PE. Resolution of the PE was documented in five of seven dogs in which follow-up echocardiography was performed, often after anti-inflammatory therapy. Resolution of PE was associated with normalisation of cardiac troponin I levels. Clinical signs had not recurred in six dogs with follow-up for more than 12 months and up to 7 years. These findings suggest an association between systemic inflammation and PE i...

Left subclavian artery dissection associated with connective tissue abnormalities resembling Marfan-like syndrome in an English bulldog
Publication date: April 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, Volume 20, Issue 2Author(s): Ilaria Biasato, Renato Zanatta, Lorella Maniscalco, Rocchina Evangelista, Bryan Iotti, Selina IussichAbstractThe unexpected demise of a 12-year-old male neutered English bulldog solicited a gross examination, which revealed a blood-filled space occurring in the proximal left subclavian artery (LSA). It originated about 1 cm from the branching point of the vessel and progressively dilated for 3 cm distal to this origin. Histopathological investigation showed that the tunica media of the LSA was more than 50% split, with the ...

Extracardiac intrapericardial myxosarcoma causing right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in a dog
Publication date: April 2018Source: Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, Volume 20, Issue 2Author(s): E.T. Karlin, V.K. Yang, M. Prabhakar, S.L. Gregorich, S. Hahn, J.E. RushAbstractA 13-year-old male castrated pomeranian cross was referred for evaluation of episodes of collapse and a suspected cardiac mass. The presence of a mass at the base of the heart within the pericardial space was confirmed by echocardiography. Additional diagnostics included computed tomography, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate, and thoracic radiographs. The mass was surgically debulked and diagnosed as myxosarcoma via histopathology. This case ...

High-pressure balloon valvuloplasty for severe pulmonary valve stenosis: a prospective observational pilot study in 25 dogs
ConclusionsIn this cohort of 25 dogs with severe PS, HPBVP was safe and effective. The procedural success rate and high number of optimal results achieved with HPBVP suggest future randomized controlled trials comparing HPBVP to conventional valvuloplasty are warranted. Left atrial deformation and phasic function determined by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease
ConclusionDogs with MMVD in CHF appear to have lower LA longitudinal strain and strain rate variables compared with dogs with subclinical disease. Further studies are needed to establish if our initial findings can provide useful information for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of dogs with MMVD.
