A pilot study of proximal strength training in Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth disease
Abstract Gait analysis of people with Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth (CMT) disease revealed proximal adaptive gait strategies to compensate for foot drop. We previously demonstrated that hip flexor muscle fatigue can limit walking endurance. This pilot study used a single‐blinded cross over design to investigate the effect of a 16‐week home‐based programme of resistance training on hip flexor muscle strength. Measures of walking endurance, gait speed, exertion, fatigue, and general activity were also recorded. The exercise protocol was based on American College of Sports Medicine recommendations. A mixed effects model was u...

Long‐term course of oxaliplatin‐induced polyneuropathy: a prospective 2‐year follow‐up study
In conclusion, persistence of OXAIPN beyond 2 years after finishing chemotherapy is common. Clinical and neurophysiological improvement is observed, although recovery is often incomplete. (Source: Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System)

Exome sequencing reveals mutations in MFN2 and GDAP1 in severe Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease
Abstract The aim of our study was to characterize electrophysiologically and explain the genetic cause of severe Charcot–Marie–Tooth (CMT) in a 3.5‐year‐old with asymptomatic parents and a maternal grandfather with a history of mild adult‐onset axonal neuropathy. Severity of neuropathy was assessed by Charcot–Marie–Tooth neuropathy score (CMTNS). Whole‐exome sequencing was performed using an Illumina TruSeq Exome Enrichment Kit on the HiSeq 1500 with results followed up by Sanger sequencing on an ABI Prism 3500XL (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). Paternity was confirmed using a panel of 15 hyperva...

Post‐traumatic stress symptoms in Guillain–Barré syndrome patients after prolonged mechanical ventilation in ICU: a preliminary report
Abstract Thirty percent of Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) patients require mechanical ventilation (MV) in intensive care unit (ICU). Post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is found in ICU survivors, and the traumatic aspects of intubation and MV have been previously reported as risk factors for PTSD after ICU. Our objective was to determine long‐term PTSD or post‐traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in GBS patients after prolonged MV in ICU. We assessed GBS patients who had MV for more than 2 months. PTSD was assessed using Horowitz Impact of Event Scale (IES), IES‐Revisited (IES‐R), and the Post‐traumatic Check...

The normal sensibility of the hand declines with age – a proclamation for the use of delta two‐point discrimination values for sensibility assessment after nerve reconstruction
Abstract The scores used to evaluate sensibility after digital nerve reconstruction do not take the patient's age into consideration, although there is evidence that the outcome after digital nerve reconstruction is age‐dependent. However, it is not clear if the normal sensibility of the hand is also age‐dependent, as the existing studies have major limitations. We evaluated the normal sensibility of the hand in 232 patients using static and moving two‐point discrimination (2PD) tests and the Semmes–Weinstein‐monofilament test. We found the climax of sensibility in the third decade with age‐dependent deteriorat...

Corneal confocal microscopy detects small fiber damage in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)
Abstract Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune mediated peripheral neuropathy with multifocal involvement. Reliable biomarkers for diagnosis, disease progression and treatment response remain to be developed. We assessed the utility of corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) as a diagnostic marker for CIDP in 16 patients. CCM parameters including corneal nerve fiber density (NFD), nerve fiber length, number of main nerve trunks, number of nerve branches, nerve tortuosity, and dendritic cell density (DCD) were compared to those from 15 healthy controls and correlated with clinical and electroph...

Clinical and epidemiological features of Guillain‐Barré syndrome in the Western Balkans
This study of patients with GBS in the Western Balkans allows us to prepare the health system better and to improve the management of patients. This study also opens opportunities for international collaboration and for taking part in the multinational studies on GBS. (Source: Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System)

Diabetic Neuropathy: Comparison between Bangladeshi immigrants and Greek‐born subjects
Abstract The aim of this study was to compare Bangladeshi immigrants with diabetes to native Greeks with diabetes and to distinguish the different risk factors for polyneuropathy in the two ethnic groups. Subjects were recruited from the outpatient diabetic clinic of a general hospital. One hundred and eleven Bangladeshi immigrants (97 men and 14 women of mean age 47 years) and one hundred and one native Greeks (82 men and 19 women of mean age 49 years) were included in the study. Sex, mean age, age at diabetes diagnosis, and diabetes duration did not differ between the two groups. Polyneuropathy was diagnosed in 53 (48%) ...
