Oral health‐related quality of life among an Australian sample of people who inject drugs
ConclusionsPWID have poorer OHRQoL than the Australian general population. Poor OHRQoL was particularly common in female PWID and those with longer injecting careers. Interventions to improve the oral health of PWID may improve their OHRQoL. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Anxiety, depression, and oral health among US pregnant women: 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
ConclusionsIn this population‐based sample, we found a two‐ to threefold increased odds of tooth loss and nonuse of oral health services among pregnant women with a lifetime diagnosis of anxiety. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine these associations among pregnant women. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Retrospective assessment of caries experience among US Naval Academy midshipmen
ConclusionsCaries experience was consistently greater for moderate‐ and high‐risk patients at all examinations. The magnitude of increase in caries experience was greater for moderate‐ and high‐risk patients. Caries history and current disease status reliably predict future caries experience in this young adult population. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Is the relative increase in income inequality related to tooth loss in middle‐aged adults?
ConclusionsRelative increases in income inequality were significantly associated with severe tooth loss and lack of a functional dentition in Brazilian middle‐aged adults. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Tracking workforce diversity in dentistry: importance, methods, and challenges
ConclusionsThe survey design was consistent with best practices, and our response analytics provide high confidence that the survey produced data representative of the URM dentist population. Enhanced study design, content, and response rates of existing survey efforts would be needed to provide a more robust body of knowledge on URM providers, perspectives, and practices. Perceived safety and benefit of community water fluoridation: 2009 HealthStyles survey
ConclusionsAlthough only a minority of the US population perceived CWF as unsafe or providing no benefit to health, perceptions regarding CWF varied by knowledge of CWF and socio‐demographic factors. Oral health promotion activities should consider these differing perceptions of CWF among groups to tailor oral health messaging appropriately. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Propensity score weighting: an application to an Early Head Start dental study
ConclusionAlthough propensity scores derived from GBM and LRM both effectively balanced observed preintervention covariates, GBM resulted in better covariate balance compared with LRM. GBM also resulted in a larger effective sample size of the control group compared with LRM. Propensity score weighting using GBM is an effective statistical method to reduce confounding due to imbalanced distributions of measured preintervention covariates in this EHS intervention study. Stages and transitions in the development of tooth brushing skills in children of Mexican immigrant families: a qualitative study
ConclusionsWe identified four distinct stages and found evidence to hypothesize that transitions from one stage to the next are triggered not by the age of the child but by parents' knowledge about oral hygiene and their perceptions of their child's achievement of physical, cognitive, and motor developmental milestones. Future quantitative research studies should be conducted to test this hypothesis in larger groups of Latinos as well as other ethnic groups. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Variables affecting the inter‐ and intra‐examiner reliability of ICDAS for occlusal caries diagnosis in permanent molars
ConclusionsICDAS presented acceptable intra‐examiners reproducibility in detecting occlusal caries over time. However, there was a clear effect for examiner's specialty and clinical experience on the inter‐examiner's reproducibility of the ICDAS system at different time intervals. Patterns of emergency department use for dental and oral health care: implications for dental and medical care coordination
ConclusionsCoordination of medical and dental treatment might improve health and reduce costs if targeted to high user populations. Health‐care delivery reforms, such as accountable care organizations, could provide vehicles for achieving this coordination. Important challenges include fragmentation of ED visits across hospitals, adequacy of dentist supply, and broader reliance on the ED for health problems. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Sociodemographic conditions, knowledge of dental diseases, dental care, and dietary habits
ConclusionsChildren showed frequent sugar consumption and insufficient frequency of brushing their teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Food‐based dietary guidelines should play a significant role in nutrition and oral health. It is especially important that oral health prevention programs reach preschool children before they establish unhealthy dietary habits. Parental education about oral health and access to oral healthcare services are also needed to improve children's oral health. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)

Dental erosion among children aged 3‐6 years and its associated indicators
ConclusionThe dental erosion prevalence in 3‐ to 6‐year‐old children in Shanghai appears to be close to that of other Chinese provinces as well as that observed in most of surveys carried out in different parts of the world. Efforts should be made to raise public awareness about the disease. Moreover, further studies targeted to explore the relationship between dental erosion and risk factors are needed. It is also necessary to establish a unified diagnostic standard for future epidemiological investigations. (Source: Journal of Public Health Dentistry)
