A 7-Year-Old Girl with Early Developed Pseudocyst After Acute Pancreatitis: A  Case Report and Literature Review
We report a 7-year-old Taiwanese girl with acute pancreatitis (AP) complicated with pseudocyst (PC). The girl was found to have a PC by ultrasonograpgy (USG) and magnetic resonance imaging 14 days after the onset of AP. The girl was discharged 21 days after management with an asymptomatic PC. The diagnostic criteria of AP included abdominal pain, serum amylase or lipase level, and imaging findings. Transabdominal USG after appropriate preparation with adequate fasting, intake of some liquids during the scanning, and right decubitus position enhance the demonstration of pancreas and peripancreatic structures. PC could be ...

Left Ulnar Artery Pseudoaneurysm and Left Hand Swelling Simulated by Elephantiasis in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1
We report a case of NF1 who had a left hand vascular pseudoaneurysm with left hand swelling mimicking elephantiasis. The characteristics of sonography make it an excellent imaging modality to investigate this sort of superficial vascular lesion. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)

The Curtain Sign in Lung Ultrasound
Publication date: June 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound, Volume 25, Issue 2 Author(s): Francis Chun Yue Lee The curtain sign (CS) is a sonographic artifact found in lung ultrasound studies. It is generally used to describe the appearance of an expanded and aerated lung, often in the context of pleural effusion diagnosis. In emergency and critical care ultrasound use, the recognition of changes to the CS is very useful in the detection of early pulmonary pathological processes occurring at the lateral lung bases and costophrenic recesses. The author suggests a simple standardisation of the CS description and des...

Ultrasound Evaluation of Liver Fibrosis
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Yang-Sheng Lin Early diagnosis of liver fibrosis is an important factor affecting the efficacy of chronic hepatitis treatment. In the past, the diagnosis of liver fibrosis was dependent on a liver biopsy which has several shortcomings as sampling error, intra- or inter-observation variations and possible procedure-related complications. Ultrasound-based elastography, tissue elastography (TE) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) have been developed to assess liver fibrosis. Current clinical evidence indicates that TE and...

Prenatal Diagnosis of Anal Atresia – A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 9 June 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Yu-Ching Chou, Wan-Ting Chang Anal atresia can be divided into high type and low type depending on the relationship between the distal rectal pouch and the puborectalis muscle. Prenatal diagnosis of anal atresia is very challenging. Indirect findings include dilated distal bowel segments and calcified intraluminal meconium in 2nd & 3rd trimester. Direct findings include no PAMC (perianal muscular complex) and no target sign (hypoechoic anal sphincter and echogenic anal mucosa). PAMC is intact in low atresia, no PAMC c...

Comparing Point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) to MRI for the Diagnosis of Medial Compartment Knee Injuries
Conclusion Ultrasound may have a role as the initial rapid imaging modality in patients with suspected medial meniscus or MCL tears as it is highly sensitive, and it may serve as an effective screening tool for patients with both acute and chronic knee pain. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)

Right-Sided Colonic Diverticulitis: Clinical Features, Sonographic Appearances, and Management
Conclusion Common US features of diverticulitis include diverticular wall thickening, surrounding echogenic fat, and intradiverticular echogenic material. Proper recognizing of these features helps in differentiating diverticulitis from appendicitis and may obviate an unnecessary emergent surgery. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)
