Idiopathic Hypereosinophilic Syndrome with Löeffler's Endocarditis
Publication date: Available online 21 June 2014 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Li-Tan Yang , Sheng-Han Tsai , Yi-Shan Tsai , I-Chuang Liao , Chih-Hsin Hsu , Wei-Chuan Tsai Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), or Löeffler's endocarditis, is a heterogenous group of disorders marked by the sustained overproduction of eosinophils involving different organ systems. Cardiac involvement, recognized as endocardial thickening and left ventricular (LV) mural thrombi, is the major cause for morbidity and mortality. Herein, we present a case with idiopathic HES complicated with severe cardiac involvement, who ...

Diagnostic Utility of US for Detecting Rotator Cuff Tears in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: Comparison with Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Conclusions With a good agreement with MRI, US was shown to be a highly sensitive and accurate imaging modality in detecting full-thickness RCTs for patients with RA who have shoulder pain, but appeared to have lower sensitivity in detecting partial-thickness RCTs compared with MRI. The Roles of Ultrasonography and Ultrasonography-guided Fine-needle Aspiration Cytology in the Planning of Management of Thyroid Cancers
Publication date: Available online 27 June 2014 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Tien-Chun Chang Because of the widespread use of thyroid ultrasonography, many thyroid lesions, even thyroid cancers, can be detected early. For these small lesions, planning of the management of thyroid cancers, especially papillary thyroid cancers, is different from previous guidelines. By contrast, for the quality of life of these patients with early detected thyroid lesions, the management should be different. In addition, there are some lesions which are undetermined by fine-needle aspiration cytology, and the planning...

Application of Ultrasound-guided Core Biopsy in Head and Neck
Publication date: Available online 27 August 2014 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Chun-Nan Chen , Tsung-Lin Yang Head and neck tumor is frequently encountered clinically, but the list of differential diagnosis of neck lumps is lengthy. Consequently, the major concern of diagnostic procedure is to effectively narrow the possibility, and finally make an accurate diagnosis. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy (USCB) has been well established in many medical fields as the standard tissue sampling procedure, with less harm than open biopsy (OB) and more pathological information than ultrasound-guided fine needle...

Lingual Thyroid: Ultrasound Assessment and Diagnosis
We report the case of a 43-year-old female who presented with a long-term lumping sensation. Head and neck ultrasonography revealed a solid tumor located in the tongue base without any thyroid tissue identified in the orthotopic position of the thyroid gland. With normal thyroid function and the cytological reports of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA), the diagnosis of an ectopic thyroid gland was confirmed. The utility of head and neck ultrasound in diagnosing ectopic thyroid glands is emphasized in this report. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)

Follicular Lymphoma in Bilateral Submandibular Glands and Thyroid Gland
We present a 42-year-old man with right submandibular mass. A right submandibular tumor was found by ultrasound examination; in addition, nonpalpable lesions in the left submandibular gland and thyroid gland were found at the same time. Similar cytology reports suggested similar origins of these tumors. The final diagnosis of the right submandibular gland after excisional biopsy was follicular lymphoma. Information from the image is sometimes not enough to make a diagnosis, therefore invasive procedures like fine needle aspiration are essential. If the cytology report is beyond expectation, further management is required. ...

Diagnosis of Giant Cell Tumor of Temporomandibular Joint with Ultrasound-guided Core Needle Biopsy
Publication date: Available online 29 August 2014 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Chih Yung Yang , Cheng-Ping Wang Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) tumors may initially present with symptoms similar to TMJ internal derangements and myositis of masticatory muscles. However, malignant tumors and specific types of benign tumors, such as giant cell tumors, may need aggressive surgical intervention. The current case is a 41-year-old man who initially presented with right preauricular pain. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a destructive bone lesion over the right TMJ with temporal bone destruction. A biopsy c...

Comparison of Two Elasticity Scoring Systems in the Assessment of the Cervical Lymph Nodes
Conclusion For qualitative RTE, the four-point scoring system had value similar to the five-point scoring system in predicting malignancy in cervical LNs. Furthermore, the reliability was comparable in both scoring systems. For the purpose of simplified evaluation, we suggested using the four-point scoring system to rate the qualitative RTE in the future. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)
