The association of media exposure and media literacy with adolescent alcohol and tobacco use
This study examined the relationship of media exposure and media literacy to alcohol and tobacco use among adolescents in Taiwan. A total of 2992 10th-grade students recruited from 26 high schools in Taipei, Taiwan, completed a questionnaire in 2010. The multivariable analysis results indicated that the students with higher alcohol and tobacco media exposure were more likely to use alcohol and tobacco and have intentions to drink and smoke, while students with higher media literacy were less likely to use alcohol and have intentions to drink and smoke. Stressful life events and depressive symptoms among symptomatic long QT syndrome patients
We examined whether long QT syndrome status moderates the association between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. Participants were 562 (n = 246 symptomatic) long QT syndrome mutation carriers. Depressive symptoms were measured with a modified version of the Beck’s Depression Inventory. There was an interaction between long QT syndrome status and stressful life events on depressive symptoms. In the symptomatic long QT syndrome patients, stressful life events were associated with depressive symptoms (B = 0.24, p < 0.001). In the asymptomatic long QT syndrome mutation carriers, this association was 62.5 p...

The evaluation of body image in children with type 1 diabetes: A case-control study
This study evaluated the body image perception in children with type 1 diabetes in order to identify symptoms of disordered eating behaviours early. Children with type 1 diabetes and controls showed underestimation and dissatisfaction with body size. The patients, especially girls, were more accurate in their perception of body size than the control group. The study sheds light on some of the underlying factors that may contribute to the development of disordered eating behaviours in adolescence. The causes of the differences of perception of body size are discussed. (Source: Journal of Health Psychology)

Mood changes following social dance sessions in people with Parkinsons disease
This study assessed the psychological benefits of dance. A total of 37 participants, with either Parkinson’s disease (n = 22) or age-matched controls (n = 15) completed mood questionnaires before and after a 10-week dance intervention. An overall reduction in total mood disturbance and a specific reduction in anger were observed. In addition, less fatigue was found for those initially scoring higher in depression. This suggests that dance can provide psychological benefits for both people with Parkinson’s disease and the elderly, with findings suggesting that this is an avenue to be explored further. Elements of patient-health-care provider communication related to cardiovascular rehabilitation referral
This study described (1) patient–health-care provider interactions regarding cardiovascular rehabilitation and (2) which discussion elements were related to patient referral. This was a prospective study of cardiovascular patients and their health-care providers. Discussion utterances were coded using the Roter Interaction Analysis System. Discussion between 26 health-care providers and 50 patients were recorded. Cardiovascular rehabilitation referral was related to greater health-care provider interactivity (odds ratio = 2.82, 95% confidence interval = 1.01–7.86) and less patient concern and worry (odds ratio ...

The dieting experience: A Jewish perspective
Considered to be a chronic recidivist condition, obesity places significant burdens on the society. The search for appropriate interventions remains challenging. Research suggests individuals’ environments should be considered when addressing eating behaviours. Nomothetic accounts of the dieting experiences of eight self-selected British Jews within a commercially run, community-based weight-management programme adapted to Jewish participants’ cultural needs were explored using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: ‘Me, myself and I’, ‘behaviour change’, ...

Hope and fatigue in chronic illness: The role of perceived stress
Fatigue is a debilitating symptom of chronic illness that is deleteriously affected by perceived stress, a process particularly relevant to inflammatory disease. Hopefulness, a goal-based motivational construct, may beneficially influence stress and fatigue, yet little research has examined these associations. We assessed the relation between hope and fatigue, and the mediating effect of stress, in individuals with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Covarying age, sex, and pain, stress partially mediated the association between hope and fatigue; those with greater hope reported less stress and consequ...

The Forum for Defence of the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude) and its role in building community participation in the fight against the privatization of health
Based on a Foucauldian framework, this article discusses the involvement of the Forum for Defence of the Sistema Único de Saúde in the fight against health care privatization. Community participation is a locus of experience that produces subjects implicated in the production of public health care. The locus of experience in this instance derives from the rejection of private elements that historically have been part of Brazilian public policies. It is an experience that produces workers and service users as agents able to defend the public system and endowed with instituting power. (Source: Journal of Health Psychology)

Temporary housing as a mental health intervention for the needs of children and adolescents users of alcohol and other drugs: Hybridity between care and protection
This article discusses temporary housing for children and adolescents as a modality of health care. Using the framework of French Institutional Analysis, the research was based on interviews with practitioners, participant observation and analysis of individual records so as to understand the trajectory of the cases and the implications of the temporary and volunteer nature of this service. The hybridity of this home and its acceptance of other possible life norms generate tension with custodial and stigmatizing practices in the Brazilian health and social assistance services available to children and adolescents. A critical view of the 'social reinsertion concept and its implications for the practice of psychologists in the area of mental health in the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude)
Improving psychological practice in mental health services in the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde) requires a critical analysis of core concepts of the psychiatric reform, such as ‘social reinsertion’. This analysis, oriented by the dialectics of exclusion/inclusion, showed that this concept is impregnated with the adaptation paradigm and asylum view which prevents its effective implantation. The results suggest it is necessary to include social aspects in the discussion of mental health, articulating it with networks of social work and recuperating the revolutionary aspect...

From manicomial logic to territorial logic: Impasses and challenges of psychosocial care
The present study describes Psychosocial Care as a new paradigm currently operating within the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, emphasising one of its key elements: the provision of mental care within a network and a territory. To this end, the social and cultural diversity of each territory is taken as fundamental aspects to enable appropriate care for mental suffering, overcoming exclusionist thinking patterns that recently have taken on worrying conservative manifestations, and eliminating misconceptions about what defines a mental health sufferer, as well as those who choose alternative ways of being. Work-related mental disorders and their inclusion in health policies in the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude)
This study discusses the inclusion of mental disorders as work-related diseases in occupational health policies in Brazil. Mental disorders first appeared as a group of occupational diseases in 1999. Establishing mental disorders as occupational diseases was a result of the confluence of several factors: a broader notion of health, a positive shift in public perception regarding preconceived judgements relating to mental disorders and the improvement in the process that defines social security benefit entitlements due to the implementation of a new methodology in 2007. This article discusses the perceptions of professionals and users about counselling practices at a counselling and testing centre in Porto Alegre/RS based on interviews with 27 service users and 14 members of the staff. The following categories emerged from thematic analysis: professionals’ perceptions on counselling, users’ perceptions on counselling and changes in counselling due to the introduction of rapid test procedures.
