Freestyle gymnastic exercise can be used to assess complex coordination in a variety of sports
ConclusionsThe main findings were: (i) that athletes did significantly better than the controls in both tests; (ii) RG and aerobics athletes did better on the FSGE than handball, water polo players and kayakers; (iii) handball players did better than kayakers, RG and aerobics athletes on the CBDE test; and (iv) better ranked athletes performed better on the FGSE test. Therefore, FSGE test appears to be a reliable test to assess coordination in variety of sport and different levels of sport performance. (Source: Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness)

Effect of opposition quality and match location on the positional demands of the 4-2-3-1 formation in elite soccer
ConclusionsThe current study supports more intense-based drills (e.g. repeated sprint training) for wide defenders and more volume-based drills (e.g. long interval training) for central midfielders, whilst total weekly training load can be adjusted based on match location and quality of oppositions on the anticipated game-load. Associations between adolescents’ preference for fitness activities and achieving the recommended weekly level of physical activity
This study aimed to explore differences in rates of achieving the weekly physical activity (PA) recommendation between adolescents who preferred fitness PA and those who did not. Furthermore, we investigated the types of PA practiced by adolescents. In total, 9,513 participants from the Czech Republic and Poland, aged 15–18 years took part in the study between 2009 and 2016. Out of this source sample, 4,977 self-reported their weekly PA using the IPAQ-Long Form, and 1,348 objectively monitored their weekly PA using pedometers and recorded the type of PA.Boys ranked fitness PA third, after team and individual sports. For g...

Metabolic effects of two high-intensity circuit training protocols: Does sequence matter?
ConclusionPerforming HIIT prior to CWT elicits a higher metabolic perturbation compared to the TRI protocol. Although a significant EE difference was detected between the two trials, the practical difference (∼20 kcal) between protocols indicates both protocols are similarly effective for caloric expenditure, metabolic and cardiorespiratory response. The effects of isomaltulose ingestion on gastric parameters and cycling performance in young men
ConclusionUnder the current exercise protocol, pre-exercise ingestion of isomaltulose compared with maltodextrin provided no additional benefit relative to gastric emptying or aerobic exercise performance. Both isomaltulose and maltodextrin ingestion did not influence gastrointestinal distress during 60 min of cycling and performance test. (Source: Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness)

Determinants for success in climbing: A systematic review
ConclusionHand, forearm strength and endurance are highly important elements in elite climbers. An efficient climbing style with perpetual focus and accuracy, high speed and low exhaustion due to adaption to repeated isometric exercise is helpful in the ascent, while low body fat and a large bone-to-tip pulp make it easier. Constant training is essential, e.g. eccentric-concentric training of finger flexors, which should be followed by active recovery. (Source: Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness)
