Value-Guided Action: Within-Day and Lagged Relations of Experiential Avoidance, Mindful Awareness, and Cognitive Fusion in a Non-Clinical Sample
This study evaluated the relations of daily EA, CF, mindful awareness, and self-reported value-guided action in a nonclinical sample (n = 104) who participated in a 16-day mindfulness meditation study. Results indicated high EA was associated with low engagement, whereas high mindful awareness was related to high engagement, in same-day value-guided behavior. Time-lagged analysis showed that high EA predicted high next-day CF, and high CF predicted reduced next-day mindful awareness. Results illuminate temporal relations within the psychological flexibility model and identify processes that may be amenable to influence and...

Telephone-supported Acceptance and Commitment Bibliotherapy for People with Multiple Sclerosis and Psychological Distress: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial
Publication date: Available online 17 July 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Barnaby Proctor, Nima Moghaddam, Nikos Evangelou, Roshan das NairAbstractA few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) show that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is beneficial for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but the effectiveness of telephone-supported self-help ACT for people with MS with low mood has not been evaluated. We assessed the feasibility of conducting an RCT of an intervention (8 weekly telephone-calls plus a self-help ACT book) compared to treatment-as-usual. Participants’ mood, quality of li...

Valued living, life fulfillment, and suicide ideation among psychiatric inpatients: The mediating role of thwarted interpersonal needs
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Jared F. Roush, Kelly C. Cukrowicz, Sean M. Mitchell, Sarah L. Brown, Nicole E. SeymourAbstractSuicide is one of the leading causes of death in psychiatric hospitals with an estimated rate of 100–400 per 100,000 admissions. The current study aimed to examine suicide ideation among psychiatric inpatients utilizing perspectives from the psychological flexibility model (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 2012) and the interpersonal theory of suicide (Joiner, 2005; Van Orden et al., 2010) to better understand suicide risk among psychia...

The PIIRAP: An alternative scoring algorithm for the IRAP using a probabilistic semiparametric effect size measure
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Maarten De Schryver, Ian Hussey, Jan De Neve, Aoife Cartwright, Dermot Barnes-HolmesAbstractThe Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) has been used to assess the probability of arbitrarily applicable relational responding or as an indirect measure of implicit attitudes. To date, IRAP effects have commonly been quantified using the DIRAP scoring algorithm, which was derived from Greenwald, Nosek and Banaji's (2003) D effect size measure. In the article, we highlight the difference between an effect size measure and a...

Using conceptual developments in RFT to direct case formulation and clinical intervention: Two case summaries
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Yvonne Barnes-Holmes, John Boorman, Joseph E. Oliver, Miles Thompson, Ciara McEnteggart, Carlton CoulterAbstractThe current paper is part of an ongoing effort to better connect RFT with the complexities of clinical phenomena. The paper outlines two broad areas, referred to as ‘verbal functional analysis’ and the ‘drill-down’, in which we believe the basic theory is showing increasingly direct application to therapy. The paper also comprises two case summaries in which verbal functional analysis and the drill-down feat...

Evaluating the effects of Acceptance and Commitment Training on the overt behavior of parents of children with autism
This study is the first to examine the effects of ACT on values-directed overt behavior in parents of children with ASD. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Notable increases in overt values-directed parent behavior were observed for all participants. Gains maintained post-training, with the greatest effects observed more than 6 months post-training. Exploratory data suggested possible decreases in parental experiential avoidance and increases in self-compassion. (Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science)

Psychological flexibility and ostracism: Experiential avoidance rather than cognitive fusion moderates distress from perceived ostracism over time
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Ian Tyndall, Daniel Waldeck, Paolo Riva, Eric D. Wesselmann, Luca PancaniAbstractPsychological inflexibility has been found to moderate psychological distress following perceived ostracism. Two component processes of psychological inflexibility, experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion, are considered key in exacerbating general emotional distress. The present study (n = 286) examined whether both experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion moderate distress from perceived ostracism or whether one of these processes al...

Psychological inflexibility and stigma: A meta-analytic review
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Jennifer Krafft, Jillian Ferrell, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. TwohigAbstractStigma is known to have major impacts on the physical and psychological health of many groups. Psychological inflexibility is a psychological process that may help explain the impact of stigma on both self and others. Accordingly, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which targets psychological inflexibility, has been researched as a potential treatment for stigma. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of these issues, this paper offers a ...

An investigation into the relationship between the three selves (Self-as-Content, Self-as-Process and Self-as-Context) and mental health in adolescents
This study examines the relative predictive power of the three selves according to CBS to predict mental health in adolescents. A sample of 176 adolescents participated. Using hierarchical multiple regression a significant model emerged indicating that the three selves model is predictive of mental health in adolescents. Results are discussed in terms of implications for future research, such as development of interventions based on the CBS conceptualization of self. (Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science)

Probing the relative psychometric validity of three measures of psychological inflexibility
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): Tyler L. RenshawAbstractThe present study probed the relative structural and concurrent validity of responses to three self-report measures of psychological inflexibility with a large sample of college students (N = 797): the revised version of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II), the shorter version of the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y8), and the longer version of the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y17). Structural validity findings showed that responses to the AAQ-II and...

A quantitative synthesis of functional analytic psychotherapy single-subject research
Publication date: January 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, Volume 7Author(s): R. Sonia Singh, William H. O’BrienAbstractFunctional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) is a contextual behavioral therapy that utilizes behaviorism within the therapeutic relationship to implement in-session changes with the idea that these changes will generalize outside of session. The therapist focuses on reinforcing adaptive behavior and decreasing problematic behavior. Although FAP has existed as a therapy for nearly three decades, there is a limited amount of research examining its efficacy, and the majority of FAP efficac...
