It's all about the process: Examining the convergent validity, conceptual coverage, unique predictive validity, and clinical utility of ACT process measures
Publication date: Available online 11 October 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Ronald D. Rogge, Jennifer S. Daks, Brooke A. Dubler, Katherine J. SaintAbstractThe Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) literature now offers a range of process measures, including: the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), the Open and Engaged State Questionnaire (OESQ), the Comprehensive Assessment of ACT Processes (CompACT), and the Multidimensional Psychological Flexibility Inventory (MPFI). The current study sought to directly compare and contrast the information provided by those scales: (1) in a...

“Using the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP) to explore common humanity as a dimension of self-compassion”
This study aimed to explore the factor of common humanity (the belief that suffering is a shared human experience) and whether people tend to identify with this factor more in relation to their own experiences or those of others. Previously, it has been suggested that when applying compassion, people tend to be harsher on themselves and more compassionate toward others. Most research in self-compassion has typically used explicit measures, which can be scientifically limiting. The present study employed an implicit measure, the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) to explore this domain. Participants (N = 55...

Acceptance-based interventions in the treatment of PTSD: Group and individual pilot data using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Publication date: Available online 2 October 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Emily Wharton, Katharine Sears Edwards, Katherine Juhasz, Robyn D. WalserAbstractAcceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a principle-based behavioral intervention that addresses human suffering using mindfulness and acceptance techniques along with behavioral commitments linked to personal values. While ACT has been applied to a wide variety of problems, it is well suited to the treatment of trauma based on its processes specifically designed to reduce experiential avoidance, and it has only just begun to be inves...

Psychological inflexibility mediates the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes
Publication date: Available online 2 October 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Helen M. Makriyianis, Emily A. Adams, Leslie L. Lozano, Taylor A. Mooney, Chloe Morton, Miriam LissAbstractAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) lead to negative mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Those with more ACEs have an increased risk for these outcomes. Little is known about variables that may mediate the relationship between ACEs and depression and anxiety. Our study investigated psychological flexibility and inflexibility as possible mediators in the relationship between ACEs and depressio...

Cutoff scores for the 8-item version of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-8) to identify different profiles of pain acceptance patterns, levels of function and behavioral flexibility
This study therefore aimed to create raw score cutoffs to support the clinical implementation of the profiles. The raw scores were developed by visual exploration of the distribution of the CPAQ-8 scores of 1775 patients. The cutoffs’ sensitivity and specificity were tested with Operating Characteristic (ROC) and Area Under the Curve (AUC) analysis and capacity to identify the profiles and patterns of behaviors were tested with ANOVA and MANOVA, in comparison to a statistically derived clustering solution. ROC analysis showed that clinical cutoffs could mimic the statistically created clusters with excellent sensitivity ...

Depressive symptoms, psychological flexibility, and binge eating in individuals seeking behavioral weight loss treatment
This study examined the relationship between depressive symptom and binge eating and a potential interactive role of psychological flexibility. Participants (N = 468, 76% female) completed self-report questionnaires of binge eating, depressive symptoms, and psychological flexibility at baseline prior to initiating behavioral weight loss. Depressive symptoms were positively associated with binge eating (B = 1.00, p < 0.001). Psychological flexibility had an interactive role (B = −0.03, p = 0.005). Among participants with minimal to mild depressive symptoms, those with higher psychological flexibili...

Publication date: Available online 10 September 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Lucy O'Neill, Gary Latchford, Lance M. McCracken, Christopher D. GrahamAbstractBeing able to assess whether psychological therapies are delivered according to their own principles is helpful for assuring treatment quality in research and training. We aimed to develop and preliminarily test a measure of therapist fidelity to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that is concise in measuring key therapist behaviours, reliable, practicable and potentially applicable across therapy contexts. This measure was develop...

Assessing values – Psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the Valuing Questionnaire in adults with chronic pain
Publication date: Available online 31 August 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Jenny Rickardsson, Vendela Zetterqvist, Mike K. Kemani, Linda Holmström, Erik Andersson, Rikard K. WicksellAbstractThe ability to engage in valued activities in the presence of pain and distress is critical to maintain or improve functioning and quality of life. Therefore, treatments based on contextual behavioral science, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), target values as a central change process. Hence, psychometrically adequate measures of the construct are needed. The Valuing Questionnaire (VQ) is...

Want to see more behavior? Consider institutional-level positive reinforcement
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): A. Solomon KurzAbstractIn their review of 160 articles in the Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science (JCBS), Newsome, Newsome, Fuller & Meyer (2019) argued prior JCBS authors have disproportionately relied on self-report measures to the neglect of more overt measures of behavior. I agree that increasing the frequency of more overt behavioral measures of behavior could potentially improve the quality of the scholarship within JCBS. To encourage these changes, we might consider a fuller analysis of the factors mainta...

Mindfulness, experiential avoidance, and affective experience in older adults
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): McKenna M. Pierson, Anne I. Roche, Natalie L. DenburgAbstractSubjective well-being is comprised of two components: affective experience and life satisfaction. Older adulthood is marked by changes and challenges that have the potential to diminish well-being. As the proportion of older adults in the population rises, it is becoming increasingly important to identify factors that may be protective against these potentially detrimental events. Mindfulness and acceptance constructs have been shown to be associated with a...
