Perceived stress and professional quality of life in nursing staff: How important is psychological flexibility?
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that the ACT framework provides a promising platform from which to develop nurse-focused stress-management interventions. The role of present moment awareness and cognitive fusion with food craving in the relationship between depression and binge eating
Publication date: Available online 8 August 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Duckhyun Jo, Eunjoo YangAbstractMindfulness is an important process involved in binge eating triggered by negative mood. However, the specific components of mindfulness and their differential roles in this process have not been explored. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to investigate the role that two mindfulness components, namely, cognitive fusion with food craving and present moment awareness play in the relationship between depression and binge eating. A total of 228 South Korean women (M = 22.91...

A service Member's experience of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for moral injury (ACT-MI) via telehealth: “Learning to accept my pain and injury by reconnecting with my values and starting to live a meaningful life”
Publication date: Available online 8 August 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Lauren M. BorgesAbstractAcceptance and Commitment Therapy for Moral Injury (ACT-MI) has been proposed to help individuals move towards their values in the presence of moral pain. The current case study is the first using ACT-MI and the first telehealth moral injury treatment application. Psychological flexibility-based interventions versus first-line psychosocial interventions for substance use disorders: Systematic review and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials
In this study, we first identified third-wave CBTs that deliberately target psychological flexibility and categorized them as psychological flexibility–based interventions (PF interventions). PF interventions included ACT, DBT, mindfulness-oriented recovery enhancement, and distress tolerance therapy. We then conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) that compared PF interventions to first-line psychosocial interventions. From a total of 2781 citations, our search identified 10 RCTs including a total of 658 participants. Compared to the first-line psychosocial interventions recommended for SUD treat...

Treatment sensitivity: Its importance in the measurement of psychological flexibility
ConclusionsThe results of the present study show greater treatment sensitivity of three alternative questionnaires measuring PF compared to the AAQ-II. The results suggest that treatment effects concerning PF may have been underestimated depending on the wording and measure used. Implications for research on PF and ACT processes and outcomes are discussed. (Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science)

Might psychological flexibility processes and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) apply in adults with painful diabetic neuropathy? A cross-sectional survey
Publication date: Available online 16 July 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Kitty Kioskli, Kirsty Winkley, Lance M. McCrackenAbstractPainful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) is a distressing and disabling condition. There is, surprisingly, relatively little research into the role of psychological variables related to PDN. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between psychological flexibility, daily functioning, and distress in people with PDN. This cross-sectional study included 225 participants who were recruited from hospital services and online. In correlation analyses, accepta...

How can process-based researchers bridge the gap between individuals and groups? Discover the dynamic p-technique
Publication date: Available online 9 July 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): A. Solomon Kurz, Yelena L. Johnson, Karen Kate Kellum, Kelly G. WilsonAbstractBehavioral researchers are concluding that conventional group-based analyses often mask meaningful individual differences and do not necessarily map onto the change processes in individual human lives. Hayes et al. (2018) have called for a renewed focus on idiographic research, but with methods capable of nuances multivariate insights and capable of scaling to nomothetic generalizations. To that end, we present a statistical technique we belie...

Long-term stability of early sudden gains in an acceptance and values-based intervention
Publication date: Available online 3 July 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Katariina Keinonen, Heidi Kyllönen, Piia Astikainen, Raimo LappalainenAbstractThough previous research has extensively reported that sudden gains are associated with superior treatment results, research on the long-term effects and stability of sudden gains is not as consistent. The current study explored the long-term stability of early sudden gains (ESGs) observed in a brief acceptance and values-based intervention for depression provided by novice therapists. The participants were 56 volunteers diagnosed with major ...

Publication date: Available online 19 June 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Anne I. Roche, Emily B. Kroska, Natalie L. DenburgAbstractBehavioral health issues such as smoking and overweight are risk factors for a variety of adverse health outcomes, including mortality. Over the past decade, a growing number of randomized controlled trials have examined the efficacy of acceptance- and mindfulness-based interventions for smoking cessation and weight loss. The purpose of the current meta-analytic reviews was to quantitatively synthesize the existing literature comparing these interventions to con...

Publication date: Available online 13 June 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Monica Barreto, Thi Anh Tran, Scott T. GaynorAbstractThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified tobacco use, physical activity, alcohol consumption, nutrition, and sleep as five key health-related behavior domains for chronic disease prevention. Only a minority of the population meet recommended guidelines across all domains. To impact population health it is important to develop interventions that can be simulateously focused, flexible, efficient, and efficacious. Toward this end, we examined the i...

The role of psychological inflexibility and self-compassion in acceptance and commitment therapy for clinical perfectionism
Publication date: Available online 11 June 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Clarissa W. Ong, Jennifer L. Barney, Tyson S. Barrett, Eric B. Lee, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. TwohigAbstractThe current study examined psychological inflexibility and self-compassion as theoretically relevant mediators and moderators of outcomes following acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for clinical perfectionism. Fifty-three participants with clinical perfectionism were randomized to either a 10-session ACT condition or a 14-week waitlist control condition (only 39 completed the posttreatment assessment). O...

Cross-sectional relations between psychological inflexibility and symptoms of depression and anxiety among adults reporting migraines or risk factors for cardiovascular disease
Publication date: Available online 5 June 2019Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Lilian Dindo, Charles P. Brandt, Jess FiedorowiczAbstractPsychological inflexibility is a multifaceted construct reflecting a rigid dominance of psychological reactions over chosen values and contingencies in guiding action. Psychological inflexibility has been related to depressive and anxiety symptoms and has been studied as a target of treatment for different forms of psychopathology. This construct, however, remains understudied among some at-risk groups. To close this gap in knowledge, the current study examined cr...
