Publication date: Available online 21 September 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Anne Puolakanaho, Asko Tolvanen, Sanna M. Kinnunen, Raimo LappalainenAbstractThe aim of this paper was to investigate the associations between mindfulness and acceptance (MAA) skills and burnout-related ill-being at work (ILLB) after eliminating the impact of worksite (WS) and general well-being in life (WELLB) factors. The results were derived from data on employees (n = 168) of varying professional backgrounds, who experienced relatively high levels of burnout. A Brief Contextual Behavioral Intervention to Improve Relationships: A Randomized Trial
This study describes a four-session intervention for increasing closeness in romantic and non-romantic dyads. Three key relational constructs - awareness, courage and love (ACL) - were targeted in a randomized control trial comparing ACL (n = 36) with an active comparison condition (n = 34). ACL was a structured protocol involving four one-hour weekly sessions between a trained coach and both members of a relational dyad. Overall, results were mixed. While there were few significant results for the full sample, for those with high fear of intimacy, the ACL intervention decreased fear of intimacy and improved social connect...

The Self-as-Context Scale: Development and Preliminary Psychometric Properties
Publication date: Available online 30 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Robert D. Zettle, Suzanne R. Gird, Blake K. Webster, Nakisha Carrasquillo-Richardson, Jeffrey A. Swails, Charles A. BurdsalAbstractUntil recently, multiple measures of all six processes posited to contribute to psychological flexibility had been created with the exception of self-as-context. To address this deficit, we conducted a series of six studies in developing and evaluating the psychometric properties of the Self-as-Context Scale (SACS) as a brief (10 items) self-report inventory. Factor analyses identified a ...

Validation of the Swedish Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (SAAQ) for parents of children with cancer
Publication date: Available online 23 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Jenny Thorsell Cederberg, Sandra Weineland, JoAnne Dahl, Gustaf LjungmanAbstractExperiential avoidance (EA) has been shown to constitute a generalized vulnerability for psychopathology. It is described as unwillingness to be in contact with aversive private experiences followed by behavioral responses to avoid those experiences. The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II) is the most frequently used measure of EA and has been shown to correlate with a wide range of measures of mental health and long-term functio...

Assessing psychological flexibility: Validation of the Open and Engaged State Questionnaire
ConclusionsConsidering the criticisms and suggestions for improvement in the literature on assessing PF, the OESQ proved to be a valuable operationalization of this construct. With better discriminant and incremental validity compared to other questionnaires as well as unique predictive value, the OESQ is important for future research on PF and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Promote Value Attainment Among Individuals with Overweight: a Multiple Baseline Evaluation
Publication date: Available online 15 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Emma Wallin, Thomas Parling, Sandra Weineland, Joanne DahlAbstractAlthough overweight is typically associated with lower quality of life, weight loss in itself does not necessarily improve quality of life. Therefore, there is an increase of studies investigating the effect of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to promote values-based behavior among people with overweight. However, few have evaluated the use of brief self-help interventions with minimal therapist support. The aim of the present study was to evalu...

Psychometric Properties of Acceptance Measures: A Systematic Review
The objective of this review was to systematically evaluate measurement properties of tools designed to measure self-reported acceptance. A systematic review of the literature on psychometric properties of acceptance measures was performed. Articles were selected if the primary aim was to develop or evaluate measurement properties (validity, reliability, responsiveness) of a self-report acceptance scale (or subscale). The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. The quality of measurement prope...

Assessing psychological inflexibility in hoarding: The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire for Hoarding (AAQH)
Publication date: Available online 8 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Jennifer Krafft, Clarissa W. Ong, Michael P. Twohig, Michael E. LevinAbstractPsychological inflexibility is a psychopathological process referring to the tendency for behavior to be overly controlled by internal experiences to an extent that interferes with quality of life. Some studies indicate that psychological inflexibility is linked to hoarding, but findings have been mixed. This inconsistency may be due to reliance on general measures of psychological inflexibility in prior research as there was previously no va...

An Experimental Comparison of Two Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Values Exercises to Increase Values-Oriented Behavior
Publication date: Available online 8 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Jessica L. Engle, Victoria M. FolletteAbstractIn Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), identifying values is central to effective treatment. Therapeutic values exercises have generally focused on the identification of core values. However, some values exercises include the additional step of asking clients to rate how closely their behaviors match their values. The effectiveness of this additional step is unknown. This online study compared the effectiveness of two values exercises with a control condition. Partici...

Preliminary psychometric properties of the Everyday Psychological Inflexibility Checklist
Publication date: Available online 7 August 2018Source: Journal of Contextual Behavioral ScienceAuthor(s): Miles Thompson, Frank W. Bond, Jo LloydAbstractThis paper provides preliminary data on a new questionnaire known as the Everyday Psychological Inflexibility Checklist (EPIC). Contextual Behavioural Science seeks to have application to human behaviour generally, not just to “psychopathology” in isolation. The field also aspires to meet some wider challenges of the human condition such as poverty, inequality, climate change and environmental destruction. It is possible that current measures, such as the AAQ-II, are ...
