A novel CPR training method using a smartphone app
Publication date: Available online 21 September 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Dana Elliot Srither, Fatimah Lateef The study aims to validate that a smartphone application can assist in the learning and skills retention for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. This cardiopulmonary resuscitation feature of the Crowdsav platform is designed to record the chest compression performance as well as the rate of compressions of the trainee. Crowdsav is available for downloading in the public domain. The application, once downloaded can be utilised during training and be replayed by the trainee at his/her ow...

A rare case of acute posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome involving brainstem in a child
We describe here the case of a boy who presented to the emergency department for headaches and strabismus. Diagnosis of PRES was retained by magnetic resonance imaging. The causes were blood pressure urgency and renal failure. Location of lesions was very rarely reported in literature and neurological troubles were persistent. Emergency physicians should evocate PRES each time there is a clinical context associated with neurological troubles by a normal brain CT scan. Early diagnosis is very important to treat its causes and improve prognosis. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

A perspective review on role of novel NSAID prodrugs in the management of acute inflammation
Publication date: Available online 17 August 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Jaya Preethi Peesa, Prasanna Raju Yalavarthi, Arun Rasheed, Mandava Venkata Basaveswara Rao Inflammation mediators, prostaglandins are causing inflammation, pain and pyrexia in the body. Synthesis of these mediators can be effectively blocked by administering the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The NSAIDs had age-old history in medicine due to their therapeutic potentials and thus they occupy the major share in clinical practice as well as in commercial market. Mostly the NSAID moieties are chemically composed...

Serum miR-126 and miR-146a levels in patients with acute cerebral infarction and their relationship with severity of the disease
Conclusions An abnormal decrease in serum levels of miR-126 and miR-146a in patients with ACI was closely related to the severity of disease. Through regulating the generation of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6, miR-126 and miR-146a may get involved in the changes of cerebral infarction condition. A case of necrotizing mediastinitis induced by acute pyopericardium
Publication date: Available online 12 August 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Yu-Jang Su, Chang-Chih Chen Deep neck infection is a potentially life-threatening disease, especially complicated with descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM). The mean age of DNM is 49 to 57.8 years old. The commonly seen causes are tonsillar, pharyngeal infection and odontogenic origins. When the deep neck infection extended to the mediastinal spaces, the pleural effusion or pericardial effusion may appear. Here is a rare young lady who had fever and sore throat for 2 weeks, and chest X ray showed bilateral pleural effusio...

Acute anterior necrotizing scleritis: a case report
Publication date: Available online 12 August 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Yuen Keat Gan, Syed Shoeb Ahmad, Sheena Mary Alexander, Amir Samsudin Necrotizing scleritis is an uncommon but potential disastrous infection to the eye. It is commonly caused by vaso-occlusive autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or surgically induced, and rarely due to infections. In this article, we presented a rare case of necrotizing scleritis caused by herpes infection in an immunocompromised patient. A 49 years old, retroviral positive gentleman presented to our clinic with a painful, red right eye associat...

Study of antinociceptive effects on acute pain treated by bioactive fractions of Hyptis suaveolens
Conclusions From the point of central nervous system depressant and good protective effect on chemical and thermal pain stimuli, it indicates that H. suaveolens might have resulted from activation of opioid and/or peripheral receptors. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Effects of diet containing monosodium glutamate on organ weights, acute blood steroidal sex hormone levels, lipid profile and erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes activities of rats
Conclusions Blood testosterone and estradiol concentrations were not significantly (P > 0.05) altered, which may not be connected with the low dose of MSG in the diet. Marginal alterations of SLP did not indicate the atherogenicity in WR-MSG. The visceral organs were not atrophic or hypertrophic because of the comparatively low dose of MSG consumed by WR-MSG and the duration of the feeding experiment. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Therapeutic experience of the application of anisodamine on acute lung injury
Conclusions The anisodamine combining with conventional therapy can relieve the degree of lung injury caused by acute pulmonary contusion, improve ventilatory function, lower the incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and inhibit the activation of inflammatory reaction and the release of inflammatory mediators. Refractory thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura following acute pancreatitis
Publication date: Available online 11 August 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Ebisa Bekele, Bethel Shiferaw, Alexandra Sokolova, Arpan Shah, Phillip Saunders, Alida Podrumar, Javed Iqbal Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare blood disorder with an estimated incidence of 4–5 cases per million people per year. It is characterized by small-vessel platelet-rich thrombi that cause thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and organ damage. There are reports in literature that TTP and acute pancreatitis are associated, indicating each can be the cause of the other. However, acute...
