New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase: A weapon for the newly emerging drug-resistant bacteria
Sanghamitra PadhiIndian Journal of Medical Sciences 2011 65(8):317-320The world has seen the emergence of many micro-organisms in the recent past, which can curb human population with their newly built genetic make-up. The latest addition to this list of panic creating organisms is, bacteria encoding the gene for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1). NDM-1 is an enzyme that can hydrolyze and inactivate carbapenems, which are used as a last resort for the treatment of multi-resistant bacterial infections. Names of these bacteria were not found in the medical literature before December 2009, because of which it can take ...

Recurrent diabetic myonecrosis: A rare complication of a common disease
We report a case of type 2 diabetes mellitus with advanced microvascular complications presenting with severe muscular pain. She was diagnosed as DMI on the basis of clinical presentation, radiological and histopathological investigations. She was managed conservatively. During 18 months of follow up, she had good improvement but subsequently other muscle groups were involved suggesting recurrent DMI. (Source: Indian Journal of Medical Sciences)

Study of blood pressure and blood sugar levels in adolescence and comparison with body mass index
Conclusion: The adolescents seem to have become heavier owing to environmental influences on growth patterns. So, a consideration should be given to shift the cut-offs for overweight and obesity to higher BMI percentiles if recent growth charts are to be followed. Adolescents with a BMI above the 95 th percentile (obese) are most likely to have obesity-related health risks. (Source: Indian Journal of Medical Sciences)

Usefulness of hemoglobin and albumin as prognostic markers for highly active antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection
Conclusions: Hemoglobin and albumin levels were found to increase after initiation of HAART. Hemoglobin and albumin were seen to be a strong prognostic marker of HIV disease progression at pre-, one, and two year post-treatment. Therefore, hemoglobin and albumin may be used together along with CD4 + T cell counts in HIV management, particularly in resource-poor settings. (Source: Indian Journal of Medical Sciences)

In-vitro evaluation and comparison of the anti-microbial potency of commercially available oral hygiene products against Streptococcus mutans
Conclusion: The oral hygiene products containing triclosan proved to be the most effective followed by those containing fluoride. Herbal products showed comparatively lesser activity in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans. Even though there are so many products available to curb the progression of dental caries in the population targeted, there is still an undoubted prevalence and incidence of caries among the general public. The need for a better alternative to help control dental caries is on the rise even today. (Source: Indian Journal of Medical Sciences)

The effect of sildenafil on the elasticity of erythrocytes in homozygous sickle cell disease
Conclusion: The result of this study shows that sildenafil caused an initial increase in erythrocyte membrane elasticity in both HbSS and HbAA subjects, and this later decreased with increasing concentration of the drug possibly due to the dual effect of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Predication of Parkinson's disease using data mining methods: A comparative analysis of tree, statistical, and support vector machine classifiers
Geeta Yadav, Yugal Kumar, Gadadhar SahooIndian Journal of Medical Sciences 2011 65(6):231-242The prediction of Parkinson's disease in early age has been challenging task among researchers, because the symptoms of disease came into existence in middle and late middle age. There are lots of symptoms that lead to Parkinson's disease. But this article focuses on the speech articulation difficulty symptoms of PD affected people and try to formulate the model on the behalf of three data mining methods. These three data mining methods are taken from three different domains of data mining i.e., from tree classifier, ...

Prevalence and relationship of human papilloma virus type 16 and type 18 with oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral leukoplakia in fresh scrappings: A PCR study
Conclusions:HPV type 16, 18, and co-infection of both types showed high prevalence in oral squamous cell carcinoma. The prevalence of HPV type 18 was found to be higher than HPV type 16 and co-infection in oral leukoplakia. It was observed that the tongue and palate lesions in the oral squamous cell carcinoma patients showed high prevalence of HPV type 16, type 18, and co-infection compared with other sites. Are we ignoring diabetic disability: A cross sectional study of diabetic myopathy
Conclusions: The present study shows that type II DM patients suffer from skeletal muscle dysfunction in the form of reduced hand grip strength and endurance. Hence the treating Physician should not be ignorant about these disabilities. In addition to the strict measures to control the blood glucose levels, interventions to improve the muscle mass and strength in these patients should be undertaken.
