Postoperative Maxillary Cyst Developing After Sinus Augmentation for Dental Implants: A Rare Case Report
Sinus augmentation is a routine procedure performed in patients presenting with severe atrophy of the posterior maxillary alveolar ridge who seek dental implant surgery. Although this strategy is successful in large part, complications such as maxillary sinusitis, antral bleeding, resorption of graft material, infection, failure of implant installation, and oroantral fistula formation are documented on occasion. However, reports of postoperative maxillary cyst (POMC) arising after sinus augmentation are rare. Described herein is a rare and large case of POMC formation after sinus augmentation. A brief review of the pertine...

Anterior Mandibular Lingual Defect As a Possible Cause of Near-Fatal Bleeding During Routine Dental Implant Surgery: A Retrospective Computed Tomography Study
Conclusions: The presence of an AMLD might be a possible cause of near-fatal bleeding during routine dental implant surgery. This study found the presence of the AMLD in a small (10.95%), but not negligible number of patients. To avoid possible complications, meticulous planning and the use of 3-D imaging are advisable before performing implant surgery in this anatomical region. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Zygoma Quad Compared With 2 Zygomatic Implants: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusions: The data analysis showed favorable results for treatment with 4 ZIs. The results showed no statistical differences in using 1 or another treatment, in terms of survival and failure rates. The reduction on treatment time and morbidity related to regenerative approaches may be its main advantage. In conclusion, the zygoma quad seems to be the treatment of choice for the rehabilitation of the severely atrophic maxilla. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Patient-Reported Outcomes After Lateral Wall Sinus Floor Elevation: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: A general peak in discomfort could be noticed on day 1 postoperatively with a general decline thereafter. Severe morbidity or discomfort occurred but not in most patients. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Osteomyelitis Arising Around Osseointegrated Dental Implants: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: The knowledge of the real impact of osteomyelitis on the outcome of implant therapy and the identification of risk factors associated with this infectious and life-threatening condition are essential for the development of prevention protocols and treatment strategies. Factors Affecting the Occurrence of Complications in the Early Stages After Dental Implant Placement: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Our results show that age is a significant factor influencing the occurrence of complications in the early stages after dental implant placement. Therefore, clinicians should consider this factor when developing their treatment strategies. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Effects of Osteotomy Lengths on the Temperature Rise of the Crestal Bone During Implant Site Preparation
Aim: To compare temperatures of the crestal bone during implant site preparation for different osteotomy lengths and implant systems. Methods: Bovine ribs were used to simulate the cortical bone of the human mandible. Three different implant systems were tested: Astra Tech, Ankylos, and XiVE. Six drills per system were performed, meaning each drilling set was used for 2 drills per 3 osteotomy lengths (8, 12, and 16 mm). Drilling force, drilling speed, drilling length, and temperature were recorded. Results: Differences in the maximum temperature of the crestal bone during the first drilling for various osteotomy le...

Coating of Sandblasted and Acid-Etched Dental Implants With Tantalum Using Vacuum Plasma Spraying
Conclusion: SLA dental implants were successfully coated with Ta using VPS. The nanoporous structure of these implants may facilitate osseointegration compared with uncoated SLA implants. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Influence of the Presence of Alveolar Mucosa at Implants: A Histological Study in Humans
Conclusions: The presence of alveolar mucosa at implants resulted in a more apical position of the coronal level of osseointegration in respect of the implant margin compared with the presence of keratinized mucosa. (Source: Implant Dentistry)

Retrospective Study of 1087 Anodized Implants Placed in Private Practice: Risk Indicators Associated With Implant Failure and Relationship Between Bone Levels and Soft Tissue Health
Conclusions: Implants with an anodized surface showed a high long-term survival rate in a daily practice. Longer implants and implants placed in the mandible were associated with greater survival. Immediate loading and tapered design did not affect implant survival. Profuse multipoint bleeding and suppuration on recall were associated with greater bone loss. (Source: Implant Dentistry)
