Assessing the need for a pre ‐exposure prophylaxis programme using the social media app Grindr®
ConclusionsIn an online survey carried out among sexually active MSM in Switzerland, only a minority of the individuals approached responded that they were currently using PrEP. However, the majority of participants were considering taking PrEP in the future. We identified a substantial proportion of PrEP users taking PrEP outside a medical setting. Hence, a national programme facilitating access to medical care and providing PrEP is urgently needed. (Source: HIV Medicine)

A high rate of HIV ‐1 acquisition post immigration among migrants in Sweden determined by a CD4 T‐cell decline trajectory model
ConclusionsThe model indicated that a substantially higher proportion of migrants are infected after arrival in Sweden than estimated using clinical routine reports. It is therefore important to further emphasize primary preventive measures among migrants who have established themselves in their new country. (Source: HIV Medicine)

Disparities in HIV ‐1 transmitted drug resistance detected by ultradeep sequencing between men who have sex with men and heterosexual populations
ConclusionsUltradeep sequencing UDS allowed sensitive monitoring of TDR, and highlighted some disparities between transmission groups. (Source: HIV Medicine)

Reduced community viral load does not coincide with a reduction in the rate of new HIV diagnoses and recent infections: data from a region of southern Italy
ConclusionsIn our setting, CVL represented a good marker of access to care and treatment; however, reduced CVL did not coincide with a reduction in the rate of NDs. (Source: HIV Medicine)

Urine assay for tenofovir to monitor adherence in real time to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine as pre ‐exposure prophylaxis
ConclusionsWe provide proof of concept that a semiquantitative urine assay measuring levels of TFV could be further developed into a point‐of‐care test and be a useful tool to monitor adherence to PrEP. (Source: HIV Medicine)

A tale of two countries: all ‐cause mortality among people living with HIV and receiving combination antiretroviral therapy in the UK and Canada
ConclusionsDespite differences in national HIV care provision and treatment guidelines, mortality risk did not differ between CANOC and UK CHIC study participants who acquired HIV through sexual transmission. (Source: HIV Medicine)

Mining for pairs: shared clinic visit dates identify steady HIV ‐positive partnerships
ConclusionsIn the context of the surge in research interest in HIV transmission pairs, this simple method widens the horizons of research on within‐pair quasi‐species exchange, transmitted drug resistance and viral recombination at the biological level and targeted prevention at the public health level. Changes in elevated cholesterol in the era of tenofovir in South Africa: risk factors, clinical management and outcomes
ConclusionsOlder age, higher BMI, lower CD4 count and a non‐tenofovir regimen were risk factors for incident elevated TC. Current guidelines do not indicate regular cholesterol testing at ART clinic visits, which are the main exposure to regular clinical monitoring for most HIV‐positive individuals. If regular cholesterol monitoring is conducted, improvements can be made to identify and treat patients sooner. (Source: HIV Medicine)

The effect of engagement in an HIV/AIDS integrated health programme on plasma HIV ‐1 RNA suppression among HIV‐positive people who use illicit drugs: a marginal structural modelling analysis
ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate that participating in an innovative HIV/AIDS‐focused adult integrated health programme that provides a broad range of clinical, harm reduction, and support services may contribute to optimizing the benefits of HAART in terms of morbidity, mortality and viral transmission among PWUD, and as a result help to fulfill the goals of the treatment‐as‐prevention strategy. High prevalence of willingness to use direct ‐acting antiviral‐based regimens for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among HIV/HCV coinfected people who use drugs
ConclusionsOverall, this study found a high prevalence of willingness to use DAA‐based regimens among HIV/HCV‐coinfected PWUD in Vancouver. Importantly, enrolment in methadone maintenance therapy was positively associated with willingness, suggesting that integrated models of HIV, HCV and addiction care should be explored as a way to address HCV‐related morbidity and mortality among HIV/HCV‐coinfected PWUD.
