An Index to Predict Ribavirin-Induced Anemia in Asian Patients With Chronic Genotype 1 Hepatitis C
Conclusions: In patients with CHC G1 and receiving combination therapy, ITPA SNP-based index was an accurate and practical solution for prediction of severe anemia.,Background: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the inosine triphosphate pyrophosphatase (ITPA) gene correlate with ribavirin (RBV)-induced anemia in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) receiving combination therapy. Managing anemia is an early priority in the treatment process.,Objectives: The aim was to develop a predictive index based on ITPA SNP status to identify CHC patients at risk of anemia.,Patients and Methods: A total of 418 eligible East As...

Optimization of Three Dimensional Culturing of the HepG2 Cell Line in Fibrin Scaffold
Conclusions: Our approach provided easy handle method using inexpensive materials like human plasma instead of purified fibrinogen to fabricate fibrin scaffold.,Results: The optimal concentrations for fibrin scaffold fabrication were achieved by adding 0.15 mol CaCl2 (50 µL) and 1 × 105 cells to 1:4 of plasma/RPMI 1640 ratio (500 µL with 2.3 mm thickness per well).,Materials and Methods: In a one-stage experimental design, Box-Behnken design strategy was performed by Minitab 15 software (version 15, Minitab. State College, PA) with three factors at three levels (low, medium and high) and 27 runs for identification of th...

Sequencing and Phylogenetic Study of Partial NS3 Gene of Iranian GB Virus C/Hepatitis G Virus (HGV) Originated From Hemodialysis Patients in Tehran
Conclusions: Overall, results of present study were consistent with the data reported earlier base on 5’ NTR in Iranian isolates and revealed genotype IR2 is major genotype in Iranian HGV-positive patient. It means there are higher similarities between Iranian and Europe-USA in HGV NS3 gene.,Results: Nucleotide BLAST results emphasized that most similar sequences to Ir NS3 sequences were those from Europe (Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom) and the United states and IR sequences were located with five leaves in a branch. In addition, homology of Ir sequences showed96.4% (between IR1 and IR2), 94.9% identity (between...

Association of Mutations in the Basal Core Promoter and Pre-core Regions of the Hepatitis B Viral Genome and Longitudinal Changes in HBV Level in HBeAg Negative Individuals: Results From a Cohort Study in Northern Iran
Conclusions: In this population with chronic HBeAg negative hepatitis B, an association was observed between the G1896A mutation in the Pre-core region of HBV and subsequent level of HBV DNA seven years later, which indicated that mutations in this region of HBV genome may contribute to disease progression in these patients and play an important role in HBV natural course of disease. Oxidative Stress Response in Patients Infected by Diverse Hepatitis C Virus Genotypes
Conclusions: More serious disease in HCV genetic subtype 1a/1b might be associated with more severe oxidative stress. Milder damage in subtypes 4, 2a/c, 2b and 3a could be related to lower oxidative response, respectively. A combination of antiviral and antioxidative therapies may enhance the overall response rate of patients with HCV infection, especially with more destructive genotypes. (Source: Hepatitis Monthly)

The Prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection and Its Related Risk Factors Among the Rural Population of Fars Province, Southern Iran
Conclusions: Our reported rate of HCV seropositivity is similar to the previous Iranian reports. However, future evaluations should be focused on the Polymerase Chain Reaction method for the detection of HCV and determining and evaluating of other related risk factors. Moreover, more attention should be paid to blood donors as a reservoir population of HCV. (Source: Hepatitis Monthly)

Serum NX-DCP as a New Noninvasive Model to Predict Significant Liver Fibrosis in Chronic Hepatitis C
Conclusions: NX-DCP correlated positively with fibrosis stage and could discriminate well between HCV-related patients with or without significant fibrosis. Moreover, NX-DCP had a similar predictive ability to the abovementioned models, and thereby could be a new noninvasive prediction tool for fibrosis.,Results: Increase in serum NX-DCP was significantly related to increase in fibrosis stage (P = 0.006). Moreover, NX-DCP was a multivariate factor associated with the presence of significant fibrosis F 3-4 (median 21 of F0-2 group vs. median 22 of F3-4 group with P = 0.002). The AUC of NX-DCP showed no significant differenc...

The Effect of Berberis Vulgaris Extract on Transaminase Activities in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Conclusions: Considering the significant decrease in the liver enzymes, triglycerides and cholesterol after using berberis vulgaris extract, further studies with larger sample sizes will identify the accurate dose as well as duration of consumption for this extract, to recommend in the treatment of patients with NAFLD.,Results: In the case group, the mean serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) decreased from 49 to 27.48 and 48.22 to 29.8 u/L, respectively, which was statistically significant compared to the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.001). In the control group, the mean of AL...
