A Systematic Review of Clinical Outcomes and Prognostic Factors for Patients Undergoing Surgery for Spinal Metastases Secondary to Breast Cancer
Conclusion With respect to clinical outcomes, surgery consistently yielded neurologic improvements in patients presenting with a deficit with a minimal risk of worsening; however, negative prognostic factors associated with shorter survival following surgery include estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor negativity, HER2 negativity, and a short DFI.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Upper Cervical Epidural Abscess in Clinical Practice: Diagnosis and Management
Conclusion A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose this rare condition with magnetic resonance imaging being the imaging modality of choice. There has been a shift toward surgical management of this condition in recent times, with favorable outcomes.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Physical Activity Measured with Accelerometer and Self-Rated Disability in Lumbar Spine Surgery: A Prospective Study
Conclusions High compliance and statistically significant improvement in physical activity were demonstrated in patients who had lumbar decompression and lumbar fusion. There was no significant correlation between improvements in subjective clinical outcome scores with changes in physical activity measurements at follow-up. Limitations of the present study include its small sample size, and the validity of objective physical activity measurements should be assessed in future larger, prospective studies.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  ...

Solitary C1 Posterior Fixation for Unstable Isolated Atlas Fractures: Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature
Conclusions Direct C1 stabilization shows promise as a “more selective” option in managing displaced atlas fractures with probable TAL disruption but cannot yet be recommended as a practice standard. Prospective clinical studies are indicated and should be structured so as to differentiate between Dickman type I and type II injuries of the TAL.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Cadaveric Spinal Surgery Simulation: A Comparison of Cadaver Types
Conclusion Thiel and Crosado cadavers both offered lifelike simulation of pedicle screw insertion, with each having advantages depending on whether the focus is on soft tissue approach or technical aspects of bony screw insertion. Both cadaver types offer the advantage of long life span, unlike fresh frozen tissue, which means cadavers can be used multiple times, thus reducing the costs.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Moderately Degenerated Human Intervertebral Disks Exhibit a Less Geometrically Specific Collagen Fiber Orientation Distribution
Conclusion The results of this study provide the first quantitative evidence that the collagen fiber orientation of moderately degenerated disks exhibits a spatial rather than homogeneous distribution and typical collagen orientation gradients characterizing healthy IVDs are only partially retained.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Accuracy of Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Insertion Technique with Conventional Dual Fluoroscopy Units and a Retrospective Comparative Study Based on Surgeon Experience
Conclusions Without using an expensive imaging support system, the classic technique of PPS insertion using dual fluoroscopy units in the lumbar and sacral spine is fairly accurate and provides good clinical outcomes, even among surgeons lacking experience.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Systemic and Topical Use of Tranexamic Acid in Spinal Surgery: A Systematic Review
Conclusion Intravenous TXA is established as an efficacious hemostatic agent in spinal surgery. Use of topical TXA in surgery suggests similar hemostatic efficacy and potentially improved safety as compared with intravenous TXA. For spinal surgery, the literature on topical TXA is sparse but promising, warranting further clinical investigation and consideration as a clinical option in cases with significant anticipated surgical site blood loss.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Screw Placement Accuracy and Outcomes Following O-Arm-Navigated Atlantoaxial Fusion: A Feasibility Study
Conclusion C1–C2 fusion using computed tomography-guided navigation is a safe and effective way to treat atlantoaxial instability. Intraoperative neuronavigation allows for high accuracy of screw placement, limits complications by sparing injury to the critical structures in the upper cervical spine, and can help surgeons make intraoperative decisions regarding complex pathology.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Trends of Posterior Long Segment Fusion with and without Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 in Patients with Scoliosis
Conclusions According to our study, patients with scoliosis demonstrated a 0.6575 average incidence increase of PLSF treatments annually. There were significant differences in incidence of PLSF procedure and patient demographics. Additionally, rhBMP-2 consumption significantly changed when we stratified it by sex, age, and region respectively.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)
