Assessment of the Learning Curve for Microendoscopic Decompression Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis through an Analysis of 480 Cases Involving a Single Surgeon
Conclusions The learning curve of microendoscopic decompression surgery for LSCS has been defined with data for a single surgeon in an institution. The operating time seems to decrease along a natural logarithmic function. The intraoperative blood loss stabilizes after the first 30 cases, whereas perioperative complications can occur at any time even after mastery of the technique.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Differences between Manufacturers of Computed Tomography –Based Computer-Assisted Surgery Systems Do Exist: A Systematic Literature Review
Conclusion This review summarizes results presented in the literature and compares screw placement accuracy using different CT-based navigation systems. Although certain factors such as the extent of the procedure and the experience and skills of the surgeon were not accounted for, the differences in accuracy demonstrated should be considered by spine surgeons and should be validated for effects on patients' outcome.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Dysphagia Rates after Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions This review represents a comprehensive estimation of the actual incidence of dysphagia across a heterogeneous group of surgeons, patients, and criteria. The classification scheme for dysphagia varied significantly within the literature. To ensure its diagnosis and identification, we recommend the use of a standardized, well-outlined method for dysphagia diagnosis.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Assessment of a Learning Strategy among Spine Surgeons
Conclusion This pilot test showed objectively that learning strategies used during AOSpine courses improved the participants' knowledge. Teaching strategies must be continually improved to ensure an optimal level of knowledge transfer.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

A Comparison of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Muscle Fat Content in the Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles with Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Patients with Lumbar Degenerative Disk Disease and Focal Disk Prolapse
Conclusions Muscle fat content in the LPM does not appear to relate to PROMS. Muscle content decreases with age. Those with low back pain (DDD) have greater subcutaneous fat thickness.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Spinal Compression Fracture Management: A Review of Current Treatment Strategies and Possible Future Avenues
Conclusions Based on current literature, it is evident that there is a lack of standard of care for patients with vertebral compression fractures, which is either due to lack of evidence that a procedure is successful or due to serious adverse effects encountered with prolonged treatment. For a consensus to be reached, prospective clinical trials need to be formulated with potential new biomarkers to assess efficacy of treatment strategies.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)

Segmental Surface Referencing during Intraoperative Three-dimensional Image-Guided Spine Navigation: An Early Validation with Comparison to Automated Referencing
Conclusion During intraoperative 3-D navigation in spine procedures, surface fiducial registration using IMF provided superior accuracy over automated registration. It allowed repeat registration without repeating radiation during long spine segment instrumentations. More studies are needed to clarify both practical and clinical application of this method.[...]Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals:Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access Full text (Source: Global Spine Journal)
