Improving the cytological diagnosis of high ‐grade serous carcinoma in ascites with a panel of complementary biomarkers in cell blocks
ConclusionThis panel of complementary biomarkers is valuable and ideal for the differential diagnosis of HGSC based on ascites cytology. (Source: Cytopathology)

The Paris System for urine cytology in upper tract urothelial specimens: A comparative analysis with biopsy and surgical resection
ConclusionMore than one‐third of the UUT cytological cases were classified as AUC and approximately 1/15 as suspicious or positive for HGUC. Based on UUT cytology specimens, the risk of malignancy of each cytological diagnostic category of TPS was comparable to those reported in the literature. The use of TPS in evaluating UUT cytology specimens was specific and sensitive in identifying patients with HGUC by histology. (Source: Cytopathology)

Pelvic lymphangioleiomyomatosis diagnosed by FNA of cyst fluid
Detailed descriptions of the cytological features of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) in serous effusions are extremely rare. However, this diagnosis should be considered when one finds three dimensional clusters of myoid cells in pleural, ascitic or cyst fluid samples, particularly those obtained from premenopausal females. A robust cytological diagnosis of LAM can be made with the help of supportive immunohistochemistry this can spare the patient a more invasive procedure such as biopsy or excision. Carcinoid tumour of soft tissue: Primary or metastasis?
Subcutaneous neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are rare and usually metastatic from deep visceras. However, occasionally a primary carcinoid of soft tissue may be encountered which can be easily diagnosed on cytology. The primary site can be confirmed after exclusion of NET from the deep viscera after extensive radiologic investigation. (Source: Cytopathology)

Detection and analysis of abnormal nuclear changes in oral cytological smears by Papanicolaou staining
The authors demonstrate the usefulness of careful characterisation of nuclear features in oral smear preparations in detecting abnormal squamous cells. This could lead to early discovery of premalignant oral lesions and allow prompt treatment to prevent cancer development. (Source: Cytopathology)

The impact of repeat FNA in non ‐diagnostic and indeterminate thyroid nodules: A 5‐year single‐centre experience
ConclusionRepeat aspiration of non‐diagnostic and indeterminate thyroid nodules had a positive impact in both groups, with diagnostic resolution rates of 80% and 75%, respectively. The present study therefore endorses the use of such strategy for the initial follow‐up of nodules with no definite diagnosis, especially in low‐resource centres with limited access to modern molecular technologies. Finnish cytotechnologists' views on the competencies of newly graduated biomedical scientists in clinical cytology
ConclusionsThe cytotechnologists who took part in our survey expected newly graduated biomedical scientists to have basic competencies in cytology. These were sampling and techniques, laboratory safety and quality management, specimen adequacy and identifying normal cells taken during gynaecological screening. They were also keen to develop education in cytology. (Source: Cytopathology)

Outcomes of endoscopic ultrasound ‐guided pancreatic FNAC diagnosis for solid and cystic lesions at Manchester Royal Infirmary based upon the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology pancreaticobiliary terminology classification scheme
ConclusionsThe Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology pancreaticobiliary terminology classification scheme is a logical system that can easily be introduced in a diagnostic cytopathology service. This classification scheme acts as an aid to diagnostic reporting, clear communication of significant results including risk of neoplasia/malignancy to clinicians, clinical audit and comparison of results with other centres. Rosettes in papillary carcinoma of thyroid: A rare cytomorphological indicator of aggressive variants
We present a case of tall cell variant of papillary carcinoma of thyroid diagnosed on cytology showing predominance of rosette‐like formations. Also described previously for the columnar cell variant, these rosettes need to be differentiated from micro‐follicles and are an indicator for aggressive variants. (Source: Cytopathology)

Pre ‐operative features of non‐invasive follicular thyroid neoplasms with papillary‐like nuclear features: An analysis of their cytological, Gene Expression Classifier and sonographic findings
ConclusionsThe majority of thyroid nodules histologically diagnosed as NIFTP have indeterminate cytology (77.8%) and are classified as suspicious (81.3%) by GEC testing. Taken together, these findings can guide clinicians toward a more conservative therapeutic approach. (Source: Cytopathology)
