Thyroid FNA cytology in Asian practice —Active surveillance for indeterminate thyroid nodules reduces overtreatment of thyroid carcinomas
Although Asian thyroid practices have implemented the American Thyroid Association guidelines, significant deviations in actual risk of malignancy (ROM) have been reported. With review of the literature from Asia, the authors examine the underlining reasons for actual ROMs reported in Asia being so different from western practice based on the author's perspective. Although the most popular diagnostic system for thyroid cytology used in Asian countries is the Bethesda system, the Japan Thyroid Association published clinical guidelines, including a national reporting system for thyroid cytology, to adapt conservative clinica...

Presence of cancer cells in gastric lavage of gastric cancer patients as an indicator of advanced disease, predictor of tumour aggressive phenotype and independent prognostic factor for poor survival: The endoluminal metastatic pathway of gastric cancer and GL0/GL1 classification
ConclusionsIn the present study, GL1 was correlated with advanced disease, aggressive tumour behaviour and poor prognosis. Although additional studies are needed to confirm these findings, the GL0/GL1 classification can be applied to GC patients to achieve higher accuracy in staging, prognostic stratification and treatment selection. Cytological diagnosis of a rare case of primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the parotid gland
In this case report, the authors describe the cytological features of a primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the parotid gland and discuss how the diagnosis was confirmed with immunocytochemistry. (Source: Cytopathology)

The prevalence problem in the era of human papillomavirus screening
Changes in the prevalence of cytological abnormalities lead to interpretation bias. In cervical cytology the prevalence effect will come to the fore as HPV screening is rolled out. (Source: Cytopathology)

Metastatic small cell carcinoma with psammoma bodies: A diagnostic pitfall
Large three‐dimensional neoplastic cell aggregates and psammoma bodies are rare in metastatic small cell carcinoma and could represent a diagnostic pitfall, given their more frequent associations with adenocarcinoma. Careful attention to other classic cytomorphologic features is cardinal to the diagnosis of small cell carcinoma. (Source: Cytopathology)

Epithelial oral mucosal cells: Do they behave differently when exposed to oral carcinogens?
ConclusionCytopathology combined with quantitative techniques such as Papanicolaou, AgNOR, and immunocytochemical expression of E‐cadherin detects changes associated with oral carcinogenesis. The innovative approach used in this study allows assessing the expression of cell adhesion (E‐cadherin) and differentiation (involucrin) markers by means of oral mucosal cytopathology. The E‐cadherin imunocytochemical expression indicated changes associated with the oral carcinogenesis process. An increase in cell proliferation rate in oral squamous cell carcinoma group was associated with the lower immunoexpression of E‐cadh...

Cytokeratin 20 immunocytochemistry on urine sediments: A potential low ‐cost adjunct to cytology in the diagnosis of low‐grade urothelial carcinoma
ConclusionsCK20 expression in non‐umbrella cells is a robust marker of urinary bladder carcinoma. It has potential clinical utility for identification of low‐grade urothelial malignancy with inconclusive cytological diagnosis. (Source: Cytopathology)

Additional diagnostic features of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma on cytology
In our article, we report additional cytolorphologic features of MASC. In addition to vacuolated cells/histiocytoid cells and colloid‐like material in the background we noticed nuclear membrane irregularities, nuclear grooving, and hyalinized tissue fragments in the cell block. These additional features can serve as important diagnostic clues in making a diagnosis of MASC on cytology. (Source: Cytopathology)

Exploring avenues for best use of cytotechnologists in non ‐gynaecological cytology: Double screening or independent sign‐out
ConclusionDouble screening of NGC cases by two cytotechnologists prior to pathologist sign‐out does not improve screening quality and is not cost‐effective. The high concordance between the CTs and pathologists in this limited group of low complexity negative cases suggests that such cases could be signed out independently by cytotechnologists.
