Pelvic lymphangioleiomyomatosis diagnosed by FNA of cyst fluid

Detailed descriptions of the cytological features of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) in serous effusions are extremely rare. However, this diagnosis should be considered when one finds three dimensional clusters of myoid cells in pleural, ascitic or cyst fluid samples, particularly those obtained from premenopausal females. A robust cytological diagnosis of LAM can be made with the help of supportive immunohistochemistry this can spare the patient a more invasive procedure such as biopsy or excision.
