Identifying epigenetically dysregulated pathways from pathway –pathway interaction networks
Background: Identification of pathways that show significant difference in activity between disease and control samples have been an interesting topic of research for over a decade. Pathways so identified serve as potential indicators of aberrations in phenotype or a disease condition. Recently, epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation are known to play an important role in altering the regulatory mechanism of biological pathways. It is reasonable to think that a set of genes that show significant difference in expression and methylation interact together to form a network of pathways. Discrimination of Systolic and Diastolic Dysfunctions using Multi-Layer Perceptron in Heart Rate Variability Analysis
In this study, the heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is used to distinguish patients with systolic congestive heart failure (CHF) from patients with diastolic CHF. In the analysis performed, the best accuracy performances of short-term HRV measures are compared. These measures are calculated in four different ways with optional normalization methods of heart rate and data. The nearest neighbor and the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) are used to evaluate the performances in discriminating these two groups. (Source: Computers in Biology and Medicine)

An approach for reducing the error rate in automated lung segmentation
Robust lung segmentation is challenging, especially when tens of thousands of lung CT scans need to be processed, as required by large multi-center studies. The goal of this work was to develop and assess a method for the fusion of segmentation results from two different methods to generate lung segmentations that have a lower failure rate than individual input segmentations. As basis for the fusion approach, lung segmentations generated with a region growing and model-based approach were utilized. (Source: Computers in Biology and Medicine)
