Refinement of clinical X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans containing metal implants
X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) data contains artefacts from many sources, with sufficient prominence to affect diagnostic utility when metal is present in the scans. These artefacts can be reduced, usually by the removal and in-filling of any sinogram data which has been affected by metal, and several such techniques have been proposed. Most of them are prone to introducing new artefacts into the CT data or may take a long time to correct the data. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce a new technique which is fast, yet can effectively remove most artefacts without introducing significant new ones. (Source: Computer...

Graph-Based Segmentation of Abnormal Nuclei in Cervical Cytology
Automation-assisted reading techniques have the potential to reduce errors and increase productivity in cervical cancer screening Birdsong (1996), Biscotti et al. (2005), Wilbur et al. (2009), Kitchener et al. (2011), Zhang et al. (2014). The key function of these techniques is to automatically distinguish potentially abnormal cells from a large numbers of normal cells in cervical cytology slides for further manual reading by pathologists Birdsong (1996), Biscotti et al. Preface
It is stating the obvious to say that the eye is an important organ, and sight our most important sense. What this actually means however, in terms of facts within medicine, epidemiology and healthcare research, is perhaps less obvious. (Source: Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics)

Feature selection for outcome prediction in oesophageal cancer using genetic algorithm and random forest classifier
Outcome prediction is the foundation for tailoring and adapting a treatment planning in cancer therapy. Medical imaging plays a fundamental role in assessing the response to a treatment. In oncology, the Standard Uptake Value (SUV) of 18-FluoroDeoxyGlucose (FDG) measured by PET is widely used for diagnosing, staging and monitoring response to therapy Van De Wiele et al. (2013). Predictive (prediction of treatment response) and prognostic studies (prediction of the survival) using image features derived from 1st order statistics, such as Metabolic Tumour Volume (MTV) or Total Lesion Glycolysis (TLG: SUVmean × MTV), have be...

Automatic detection and classification of regions of FDG uptake in whole-body PET-CT lymphoma studies
[18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography –computed tomography (FDG PET–CT) is regarded as the imaging modality of choice for the evaluation, staging and assessment of response in many malignancies including the lymphomas (Hong et al., 2007; Freudenberg et al., 2004; Wahl, 2009). The combination of PET and CT in one device combines the sensitivity of PET to detect regions of abnormal function and the anatomical localization of CT (Wahl, 2009). Sites of disease usually display greater FDG uptake than normal structures. (Source: Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics)
