Commentary: Why measuring clinical change at the individual level is challenging but crucial – commentary on Jensen and Corralejo (2017)
Jensen and Corralejo highlight that most mental health intervention research focuses on the group level rather than individual level. They looked at parent‐reported outcomes for up to 24 children and found that individual‐level findings appear to tell a less positive story than the more traditional group‐level finding. They call for more reporting of outcomes at individual level. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Abstract There are significant concerns, in countries around the world, about the mental health of children and young people and their access to appropriate services (Kutcher, McLuckie, & for the Child and Youth Advisory Committee, Mental Health Commission of Canada, ; Mental Health Commission, ; Paula, Lauridsen‐Ribeiro, Wissow, Bordin, & Evans‐Lacko, ; Wolfe & McKee, ; Department of Health, ). Common themes include: difficulties in accessing services, especially for some vulnerable groups, levels of resourcing, waiting times and training and staffing levels, although there are variations in emphasis. ‘Paediatric bipolar disorder’ rates are lower than claimed – a reexamination of the epidemiological surveys used by a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsRates of PBD were generally substantially lower than 1.8%, particularly in non‐US surveys, and if both parent and adolescent reports were required to meet the diagnostic threshold they fell to close to zero. The reanalysis suggests that bipolar disorder is rare before the expected age of onset in later adolescence. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

What constitutes ‘good practice’ in early intervention for psychosis? Analysis of clinical guidelines
ConclusionsWe argue that, to ensure good practice in EIP, procedural and substantive ethical expectations embedded in EIP guideline documents should be made explicit in EIP service and care delivery. We suggest that the procedural and substantive factors highlighted in this paper contribute useful dimensions for the eventual evaluation of good practice in EIP services across England.
