Review: The impact of pediatric mental health care provided outpatient, primary care, community and school settings on emergency department use – a systematic review
ConclusionsAt this time, there is limited evidence to suggest outpatient, primary care, community and/or school‐based mental health services impact ED use and costs for mental health care. Additional studies are needed. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Exploring the challenges of meeting child mental health needs through community engagement in Kenya
ConclusionsStakeholders’ views are important in informing the planning, delivery and evaluation of interventions. However, for such interventions to be sustained, a clear therapeutic framework, evidence‐base and sociocultural adaptation are likely to be important factors. Review: Prevention of anxiety among at ‐risk children and adolescents – a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsFourteen studies included children and young people who presented with elevated anxiety symptoms, but anxiety disorder was not ruled out in the participants in these studies. Hence, these studies might be reporting results of mixed prevention/early intervention programmes. Prevention programmes that target developmental risk factors, not only disorder maintaining factors, appear most promising. The clinically meaningful impact of anxiety disorder prevention programmes remains unknown. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

The Sheffield Learning Disabilities Outcome Measure: a factor analysis
ConclusionsThis has implications in terms of building evidence to support the clinical and research use of this tool; to provide evidence‐based clinical services, and overall, to gain a better understanding of patients and their families, which will allow for optimum service provision. Review: Longitudinal trajectories of child and adolescent depressive symptoms and their predictors – a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsThe review highlighted consistent evidence of subgroups of children and adolescents who differ in their depressive symptom development over time. The findings suggest preventative interventions should evaluate the longer term benefits of increasing membership in low and moderate trajectories, while also targeting reductions in high‐risk subgroups. Considerable between‐study method and measurement variation indicate the need for future trajectory studies to use standardized methods. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Prolonged breastfeeding for 24  months or more and mental health at 6 years of age: evidence from the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study, Brazil
ConclusionsIn this cohort there was no association between breastfeeding for 24 months or more and an increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders at the age of 6 years. Studies analyzing the medium‐ and long‐term effects of prolonged breastfeeding for 2 years or more are scarce and further research is needed regarding this practice. Measurement Issues: The measurement of obsessive compulsive disorder in children and young people in clinical practice
ConclusionsThere are several measurement tools with good psychometric properties that are useful for initial screening/identification of OCD, as well as formal diagnosis, symptom tracking and treatment evaluation. With the availability of brief screens, as well as online diagnostic measures, such tools should not be a burden on clinical practice, but rather a helpful aid to support clinicians' assessment and treatment of OCD. Editorial: Pharmacotherapy and adolescent depression – an important treatment option
Over the past decade, rates of depression and of suicide in adolescents have been increasing (Collishaw, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 56, 2015, 370; Bor et al., The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 48, 2014, 606). At the same time, there is some evidence that rates of diagnosis and, in the US at least, referral for depression in adolescents has been declining (Libby et al., Archives of General Psychiatry, 66, 2009, 633; John et al., Psychological Medicine, 46, 2016, 3315). These worrying statistics highlight the importance of disseminating accurate information about the risks and benefits...
