Environmental exposure of heavy metal (lead and cadmium) and hearing loss: data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES 2010 –2013)
ConclusionsThe present study findings suggest that even exposure to low-level lead is a risk factor for high-frequency hearing loss. A prospective epidemiologic study should be conducted to identify the causal relationship between human health and exposure to heavy metals, and efforts to reduce heavy metal exposure in the general population should continue. Increased risk of thyroid cancer in female residents nearby nuclear power plants in Korea: was it due to detection bias?
ConclusionsWe could not find any evidence supporting the assertion that detection bias influenced the increased risks of female thyroid cancer observed in the exposed group of the KREEC-R study, as opposed to the control group. (Source: Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

HCFC-123-induced toxic hepatitis and death at a Korean fire extinguisher manufacturing facility: a case series
ConclusionsWork environment assessments have not included this agent. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to report a case of death related to HCFC-123-induced liver damage. Our findings suggest that exposure standards and limits for HCFC-123 must be developed in Korea; work environments will have to be improved based on such standards. The association between Korean employed workers ’ on-call work and health problems, injuries
ConclusionsThe present study found that on-call work results in an increased risk of health problems and injuries. This study is the result of analyses of broad range of the job spectrum in Korean employed workers; thus, future studies are necessary to determine the effects of on-call work in various job groups. Work-related olfactory disorder: a case series and review
ConclusionThe study results confirmed work-relatedness when the subject was young, and the duration of exposure was long without any other cause of anosmia. Regarding compensation for occupational diseases, work-relatedness can be recognized as a relative concept. (Source: Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

The perceived effects and comfort of various body armour systems on police officers while performing occupational tasks
ConclusionsOfficers perceived ILAV B to have positive effects on task performance. It was also rated more comfortable than the other two, possibly due to a longer torso design which shifted load from the shoulders to the hips and pelvis. Officer perceptions of comfort and effects on occupational performance should be considered when designing and procuring armour systems. Although ILAVs may be similar, perceived impacts may vary between officers. (Source: Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Improved cardiorespiratory fitness after occupational rehabilitation in merged diagnostic groups
ConclusionsThis study indicates that occupational inpatient multicomponent rehabilitation including physical exercise and ACT may promote a long-term increase in physical exercise that is sufficient to induce a significant increase in cardiorespiratory fitness.Trial registrationThe current study is not registered, but is part of a larger trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov (No.:NCT01926574, registered 21. Aug 2013). (Source: Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

The standards for recognition of occupational cancers related with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Korea
AbstractPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen. PAHs have carcinogenicity in human. Cancers related with PAHs include cancers of lung, skin, bladder, and others. International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined several occupations that can be exposure to PAHs were probable carcinogens to human. National Toxicology Program (NTP) classified coal tars and coal tar pitches, and coke oven emissions as known to human carcinogens, and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified coke oven emissions as human carcinogen.PAHs can be produced both naturally...

Overview of occupational cancer in painters in Korea
AbstractComprehensive consideration is necessary for setting guidelines to evaluate evidence of occupational cancer in painters due to work-related exposure to carcinogens in paint (a phenomenon termed herein as “work-relatedness”). The aim of the present research is to perform a comprehensive review and to suggest criteria for the provision of compensation for occupational neoplasm among painters in Korea. In order to perform a comprehensive review, this study assessed and evaluated scientific reports of carcinogenicities from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Industrial Injuries Advisory ...

Radiation-related occupational cancer and its recognition criteria in South Korea
AbstractIonizing radiation is a well-known carcinogen, and is listed as one carcinogenic agent of occupational cancer. Given the increase in the number of workers exposed to radiation, as well as the increase in concern regarding occupational cancer, the number of radiation-related occupational cancer claims is expected to increase. Unlike exposure assessment of other carcinogenic agents in the workplace, such as asbestos and benzene, radiation exposure is usually assessed on an individual basis with personal dosimeters, which makes it feasible to assess whether a worker ’s cancer occurrence is associated with their indi...
