How to maintain a high energy level when traveling for business
NOTE from Phil: What follows is a post from my good friend and fellow Milwaukee small business owner Jim Raffel. Jim travels a LOT for business, so his insights are super helpful for me, and I expect will be for you too! Not all aspects of traveling for business are nearly as glamorous as some folks imagine. A client dinner at a five-star restaurant can be great, but that comes at the end of a long day filled with meetings and other work. Add to that the need to make time for a routine of healthy eating and exercise to maintain a high energy level and you quickly realize that work on the road is not a vacation. Work comes ...

She keeps me on track (no easy feat) and enables me to stay more focused and that allows me to more available to grow my business. There are a million things to do every day and only so many hours in a day. Left to our own devices, we may do the task that is fun or interesting or new, and not the task that we SHOULD be doing. When we focus on the wrong task, we may come up with some...

Get the heck out of town – and vacate!
Vacation. I have never taken one. No, seriously, I have never taken a vacation before but I am going to take one now, for most of the month of July. Connecting the 5-Year Journey to Discovering You
Photo credit Lyssa Vang [Today's guest post is by my good friend and co-host of The Shut Up Show, Berni Xiong. As The Shin Kicking Life Spark, Berni helps solopreneurs spark people and spark movements.] It’s hard to believe I almost let myself whittle away to nothing nearly five years ago. Literally. Two weeks after I kicked my corporate sales job to the curb and started my first entrepreneurial venture in coaching, I got sick with a mystery diagnosis. I was hospitalized for seven days. Unable to work on building the new business. Uninsured. Unemployed. On top of that, I was forced into involuntary anorexia by four docto...

Get some Extreme Leadership
Many years ago I was introduced to a book that changed my life. It talked about Love and leadership, among many other leadership ideas. The book was written as a fable, which means it wasn’t your typical “this is how you must lead” leadership book. Instead it demonstrated through the power of story how a radical new way of leading, an extreme way of leading, could make a difference in an organization. This book changed the way I led my teams, and it reinforced that it was more than ok to talk about Love with your team. Fast forward a few years and I got to meet the author. We became good friends and have ...

Three Unexpected Lessons Learned After Leaving Corporate America
On May 31st, 2010, I completed my last day as a corporate employee. My last work day was May 27th. It was a wonderful Friday, and I turned out the lights in the place as the last manager on duty before a nice long 3 day weekend for Memorial Day. I didn’t turn in my company issued BlackBerry or my access card. My e-mail wasn’t shut down. And I knew I’d see everyone in a few weeks when I got back from some work I had already booked out of state, as my former employer wanted me to work on a project for another 90 days as a consultant. The lessons I learned started in earnest three years ago. They’re no...

The 3 R’s of DIY Video: Record, Rinse, Repeat
[Today's guest post…..Sean is the Head of Business Development at Bravo Video, which enables businesses to capture video from customers, users and fans - right over the web.] Notice any trends lately on Phil’s blog?  If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed a handful of self-recorded videos in some of Phil’s recent posts.  Knowing what we know about Phil, my guess is he’s on to something. We also know that video is incredibly powerful, so I won’t spend too much time arguing this point (although I do feel the need to mention that a recent report from comScore shows tha...

Help Stop Human Trafficking in Milwaukee and Beyond
Did you know Approximately 27 million people a year are trafficked worldwide for labor and sexual exploitation. Of these, 80% are women and 50% are children. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Estimated to generate $32 billion annually, it is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Due to increased media attention, many Americans are more aware of the horrors of trafficking. But most perceive it to be a crime isolated to the far corners of the globe rather than a domestic or local issue. Trafficking victims have been identified in cities, suburbs, and rural area in all 50 states including every county in ...

Discover the Power of Story Telling for Your Small Business
One of the most important tools you have as a small business owner is the power of storytelling. Your story makes the difference between someone buying from you, and someone buying from someone else. Not directly mind you, but indirectly. All of the marketing you do, all of the people you hire, and yes, all of the reasons you’ve started your business, they all matter to somebody, often to you. What story gets passed down from generation to generation? That your company had another record year in 2008? Or that your company was founded in 1997 by a single dad looking for a better way for his son not to have to play bas...

How Can My Business Get Social Media Right?
In Nielsen’s 2012 annual Social Media Report, they reported that Americans were, collectively, spending more than two billion hours on social media sites every month. With 212 million Americans using some form of social media, businesses (both small and large) cannot overlook these sites when coming up with a marketing plan. Here are a few tips to nail your company’s social media presence: 1. Plan Your Strategy With so many social networking sites to choose from, each with its own style of conversation, you’ll have to come up with a plan in order to be successful. Before you make your first post or tweet,...

Prepare for the Worst (but Expect the Best)
Very often I get what I expect, for better or for worse. I always expect the best out of people, and fortunately, I get what I expect. People generally EXCEED my expectations – and they’re even better than I’d hoped they’d be. But I also prepare for the worst. I leave myself extra time everywhere I go – just in case. This morning offered a great reason of why I do both of these things. I am on my way to Phoenix for a speaking engagement. I booked the first flight of the day out, as I always do, just in case there are weather problems out of Milwaukee, or Chicago, as is often the case. This mor...

You have a choice – and neither is wrong
Click here to view the embedded video. NOTE: If you can’t see the embedded video, read the article, and I’ll click the link at the end of the article. Today I was stopped in my tracks by an article that was a lot different than I expected. It’s in praise of being unremarkable and I think it has some valid points. To quickly summarize, the author points out that not everyone should choose to flower “rainbow bombs” or pursue other lofty dreams, that instead they can choose the unremarkable. As someone who is following his passion, I didn’t think this would resonate with me at all – ...
